Since arriving in Australia as an American study abroad student, I've been asked many stereotypical questions about America. By far, the topic I've been asked the most about has been Donald Trump. Everyone has pretty similar questions: What's the deal with Donald Trump? Do you like Donald Trump? How do you feel about Donald Trump? Why Donald Trump?
Let me just say, I do not support Donald Trump. In fact, I don't know anybody who does. The majority of Trump's supporters are, sad to say, grossly misinformed and uneducated about Trump's policies and the policies of the other candidates. Being a billionaire and the star of a reality TV show does not make you qualified to be President. As a student in the midst of receiving her bachelor's degree, studying on the other side of the world, it baffles me that people can support him, or think that I can.
The Australians often seem disappointed when I tell them that I don't support him, or that I don't want them asking me questions about him. They also seem disappointed that none of the other Americans they've met have been Trump supporters, either. Americans who chose to leave their own country and study in another country on the other side of the world are pretty unlikely to be Trump supporters in general. Why? Americans have the stereotype of never traveling, of never going more than a few states over, of not being interested in or aware of the rest of the world. Therefore, the American students that chose not only to leave their home states, but also their home country, to study on the other side of the world are unlikely to be uneducated and misinformed. As a result, they are unlikely to be Trump supporters.
It's crazy to me that Donald Trump is a strong candidate for the presidency. Frankly, it's terrifying that someone like him could potentially be in charge of our country. I don't find it funny for people to joke at America's expense about Trump because it's a reality for us, not just something to look at and laugh about. To everyone who's ever asked me about Trump, I really don't get it either. It may be funny for you to look at it and laugh, but it's terrifying for the rest of us.
Yes, I am an American, and no, I am not a Trump supporter. On behalf of all Americans in Australia, please stop asking about him.
