There's no doubt that this year's NCAA tournament was thrilling. From #12 Yale winning big over #5 Oregon, or #15 Middle Tennessee stealing away a win from the predicted champion Michigan State, the thrilling moments just kept coming. But by the time the tournament was narrowed down to the Elite Eight, things got a little boring.
As a huge basketball fan, I expect big but close wins from teams. But these past 6 or so games, close wins are not what I saw. For example, in a Sweet 16 game #4 Duke against #1 Oregon––even while Duke is a #4 seed, they are still the Duke Blue Devils, one of the best college basketball programs in the history of sports. But the Oregon Ducks took the Blue Devils for a ride, winning 82 to 68.
In that same region, in the Elite Eight, #1 Oregon and #2 Oklahoma, Oklahoma handed Oregon a huge loss, 80 to 68. While these games were boring and anything but exciting, the Final Four was close ahead and I had hope that the 2 games would bring excitement and edge-of-your-seat entertainment. After watching #10 Syracuse dominate #1 Virginia, I was looking forward to a tough fight between Syracuse and #1 University of North Carolina. On the other end of the bracket, #2 Oklahoma and Buddy Heid took the bracket by storm and beat #1 Oregon easily. With Villanova versus Oklahoma and UNC versus Syracuse in the Final Four, I was expecting a great night of basketball with close scoring and defense.
Saturday's Final Four was anything but exciting. The first game, Villanova versus Oklahoma was a blowout, 95 to 51 Villanova. While Nova's defense kept superstar Buddy Heid to 9 points, a 44-point win during the NCAA Final Four is ridiculous. By the time halftime came around, I was completely done with the game. The UNC versus Syracuse game was the game I was really looking forward to, but an 83 to 66 win for UNC closed the game well before halftime. While Syracuse was a #10 team, their track record during the tournament has been great.
I am by no means blaming the teams for this boring tournament. The way the majority of them won was by out-scoring their opponents. But when there are fast breaks, alley-oops and cocky dunks during a game, I get kind of bored. While I am a huge basketball fan, I was anything but impressed by these teams this year and the tournament. It was rather mediocre in my eyes, yet quite unpredictable.
