I love professional wrestling. I don't know whether it's the spectacle or the ridiculousness of the story lines but I just love seeing two people pretend to beat each other up. Much like anything, however, Sturgeon's Law comes into effect and it becomes a lot clearer that for every one great match, there's around five bad matches. In this new series for the Odyssey, I hope to bring to your attention some of the absolute worst that wrestling has to offer.
This segment focuses on the main event of TNA's Victory Road 2011 pay-per-view. What was set to be a title match between "The Icon" Sting and WWE alumni Jeff Hardy turned out to be the icing on the cake of what was already a sub-par event. When it came time for Jeff Hardy to come out, it was immediately noticeable that something was wrong. Instead of coming out to the ring as his music played, it instead took Hardy a little bit before he started walking to the ring. Even during that walk, it's apparent that not everything was well with Hardy, as he was stumbling out like he was a zombie. It should be noted at this point that Hardy has known drug problems and was a heavy user around the time of this match.
This caused Eric Bischoff to come out (even alluding to the fact that something was wrong by shouting "slight change of plans") and presumably tell Sting to make it quick before Hardy made an even bigger joke of himself and the company. To Sting's credit, he totally did! The match itself isn't even thirty seconds long, as soon as Hardy was finished messing with the crowd, Sting immediately hit his finisher and pins Hardy for the win. You can even see Hardy try to kick out while Sting kept pinning him down, indicating that this was not the planned finish to the match. The shock on Hardy's face when he loses says it all.
