Wrapping Up My Time At The Odyssey

I woke up Thursday morning to some good news on twitter regarding my Alonso Edward Olympic Moment article. While by no means did it gain widespread praise, some Panamanians found it (Edward is a native of Panama), and it now has seven retweets and 10 likes. In addition, two people quoted the tweet and shared their thoughts. It is by far the best performing of my articles that I have tweeted, and this comes a full week and a half after I originally shared it. Last Wednesday, Edward qualified easily for the 200m final by winning his semifinal heat in 20.07 seconds--which would explain the search traction. Alonso finished seventh in the final with a time of 20.23 seconds, as he appeared to experience some discomfort in the last thirty or so meters on a rainy night in Rio.

Secondly, I was just offered an opportunity to start writing for a relatively new sports blog (https://letmebfrankblog.com/) and am in the process of writing my first piece on last-place punishments in fantasy football leagues. As a result, I have made the decision to leave Odyssey. Simply put, I just feel it is a better fit.

I wanted to thank both Lizzie Erftmier, Creighton's Editor-in-Chief, and Angelina Matarozzi, our managing editor, for providing me the opportunity to share my (not always PC, oft intentionally inflammatory) takes on anything that came to my mind. I am sure it was not always easy, so I greatly appreciate them for sticking with me.

Thank you Lizzie for sympathizing with me during my stint at my grandparents' and reminding me to share my articles when I became forgetful, among other things.

Thank you Angelina for featuring some of my pieces on your weekly favorites in the GroupMe, and being so excited about my Villanova (her alma mater) ESPYs article. Though Creighton and Villanova will jockey for the top spot in the Big East for years to come, I have a great amount of respect for Jay Wright. I have actually held Villanova in higher regards longer than I have Creighton, as I grew up with season tickets to Drake University basketball for 15 years. It is tough to admit that I absolutely DESPISED the Bluejays when they were still in the Missouri Valley Conference, and even tougher to come to grips with the fact that I jeered Doug McDermott. Funny how things work out. Also, remember this?

Before I go down a sports-related rabbit hole, I would like to conclude by again thanking both of these hard workers for not only helping me out personally, but for both of the jobs that they do for Odyssey. The Creighton team and the site's overall growth since I started last October has been amazing, and I consider myself extremely lucky to have been part of the process. There is plenty of talent on staff, so check back often.

Writing, especially about sports, has gone from what I considered an afterthought to something I plan on doing for years to come in some capacity or another. Lizzie and Angelina, above all, made it all possible for me, and I am truly grateful.

Also, shoutout to Jack Cooney for letting me borrow his brain while writing various pieces.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
