In this time when feminism has sky-rocketed, I couldn't help but sit back and think about things in pop culture/entertainment that really can make a point to its audiences. In honor of the Women's March happening world wide, I wanted to share some great movies/tv shows who share the same themes that feminism encompasses. No spoilers and most mentioned are easily accessed through Netflix!
1. How To Get Away With Murder
2. Revenge
Emily Thorne's tragic past leaves her with a huge fortune and motivation to do what it takes to avenge her father. With scandal and danger, she moves from one person to another to figure out her family secrets no matter the cost. She's a leading lady you don't want to mess with and does it while rocking stiletto heels. People don't give her credit because she comes from a pampered past but she proves them all wrong.
3. Gone With the Wind
Hattie McDaniel plays the ground-breaking role, Mammy in this Hollywood classic. Mammy doesn't put up with the prestigious/wealthy Southern upper-class whom she cares for in the mansion, she tells them how it is and wins our hearts when she does. To make her even more awesome, McDaniel then won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress making her the first African American to win an Oscar. To me though, she is a main character in this movie by how strong of a character she is.
4. The Princess and the Frog
Tiana is a powerful leading lady who teaches young girls that you can fulfill your dreams with hard work and kindness. Tiana takes pride in where she comes from as she works her hardest to fulfill her dreams of opening a restaurant in the 1920's swinging New Orleans. Of course, a voo-doo witch doctor and a stubborn Prince do cross her way putting a twist on her path to success.
5. Picture Perfect
Jennifer Aniston plays Kate, a young woman in the busy advertising work world of 1990's New York City. She's hilarious, she's modern, andshe's headstrong which gets her in trouble when her boss doesn't take her seriously because she's still a single woman in her late 20's. This costs her a big promotion so she gets into a huge mess by trying to show her office someone she isn't but later learns to embrace herself. Also, who doesn't love Jennifer?!
Rock on, ladies!!!
