I Wish My Parents Knew

Mom and Dad, I'm not who you think I am.

I Wish My Parents Knew
Madyson Dyer

I wish my parents truly knew the real me. I wish they knew how hard I work. I wish they knew that all I want to do is win their approval. I wish they knew that I struggle every day. I wish they knew that I'm not the happy person they think I am. I wish they knew I struggle with self-image and self-worth every day.

I wish my parents knew about the late nights of studying and crying because I can't understand a class. I wish my parents knew that I make myself sick over bad grades. I wish my parents knew that I do everything I can to succeed but some times it's not enough. I wish my parents knew that I'm not as smart as they give me credit for. I wish my parents knew I am lazy and that I sleep in on the weekends because that's all the sleep I'll get for a week. I wish my parents knew of all the plans I had to say no to so I can study. I wish my parents saw how much I really do work.

I wish my parents knew that I struggle with my self-image. I wish they knew that I feel like I am not good enough. I wish my parents knew that I can't look in a mirror. I wish they knew that I try to better myself but get frustrated. I wish they knew that I drive myself to mental breakdowns because I can't live up to expectations. I wish my parents knew I have a hard time trusting people. I wish my parents knew I hate asking for help. I wish they knew how fragile I really am. I wish they knew that words rattle around in my head for a long time. I wish they knew that some days I struggle to just get out of bed but I push myself through a day anyway. I wish my parents knew how alone I feel.

I wish my parents knew that everything I do is to win their approval and make them proud of me. I wish my parents knew that I feel like a disappointment. I wish they knew that I don't tell them things because I don't want them to be disappointed in me.I wish they knew that even though they don't mean it, they make me feel as if I am not good enough.

I wish my parents realized that my GPA does not define me, neither does my weight. I wish my parents realized that my faith is important to me. I wish my parents knew I love to sing. I wish my parents knew that I love silly things like Broadway and Disney. I wish my parents knew my child like manner keeps me optimistic. I wish my parents knew that I just want to make a difference in the world.

I wish my parents knew.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
