I'm going to start off by saying that I'm not usually one for politics. It is never my go-to ice breaker or even typical conversation with close friends of mine, so it's a miracle I'm even writing about it. However, I think it's safe to say that if there ever truly is a detrimental need to talk politics, it's when there's an upcoming presidential election.
Every time I go on almost any social media platform, I see a tremendous amount of campaigning for Bernie Sanders. Yet, when I look at the results after some states have had their primaries, that result is not reflected. Take Super Tuesday's results for example.
Every vote counts. I know in some states it's already too late, but if your state is coming up to vote soon, do it. Don't just say "oh someone else will vote for who I want anyways" because odds are many "someone else's" are thinking the exact same thing. You want something? Act on it. Make your mark.
Afraid of a certain candidate getting more votes against your favorite? Well, that person's supporters are voting and your favorite is relying on you as well. Don't let them down. You can't complain if someone else gets the nomination if you didn't try. You can "Feel the Bern" all you want, but it doesn't make a difference if you don't vote. Words are words, but action is what makes the actual difference here. For a lot of us, this is the first time we get to vote in a presidential election. Use it and make it count. I voted during my state's primaries for the first time and it is an incredible feeling to be able to exercise that right and privilege. Even if my choice doesn't get the nomination, I know I did something to try.
Another major issue is the whole being away at college thing, specifically if you attend a college that is not in your home state. This site should hopefully answer any questions you may have concerning how to vote and obtain an absentee ballot. The requirements for each state are listed on the page. Do this as soon as possible because if I'm not mistaken it's quite a process, but don't be discouraged. If you truly feel strongly about a candidate, a little extra work should be nothing.
Many don't expect the youth to vote, but we are the future of this country. If you are of age to vote, you hold the power to help control the future that you want to live in. You have a say. Voting is how you can implement your say, so why not use it?
People around the world are still struggling to obtain their right to vote and have a say in their government. That benefit is given to us in this country once we become of age. Take advantage that you have this right in this country and exercise it. Don't like how these campaigns are unfolding? Worried about the future of our country? Do something about it, because you can. No one's holding you back.
