I had never peed in the shower before in my entire life until such a subject came up over lunch one day in high school. I thought such a concept was completely barbaric and I wasn’t sure how people could participate in such an unhygienic deed. Don’t ask me how the subject came up, I can’t remember nor do I think I’d want to remember but I do remember it’s controversial content sparking a huge debate amongst my friends on whether it should be hygienically and socially acceptable to pee in the shower. The obvious argument against it was that it is was unsanitary and defeated the whole the purpose of taking a shower in the first place. Now to me, I thought this was a pretty cut and dry response and I really couldn’t see another argument. I ended up doing some research on the topic and was surprised to find out I was not the first one who was curious. Here are some statistics that may persuade one differently against peeing in the shower:
1. According to an article by Charlotte Anderson in 2017, Clemson University has a population of 20,000
Students could save $200,000 plus a year if each student peed in the shower. If everyone started peeing in the shower, Clemson could save enough water to fill an Olympic size swimming pool 26 times
2. According to the EPA, flushing the toilet accounts for 27% of Americans yearly water usage.
Roughly every year the American population spends 5 million dollars on flushing toilets.
3. The average toilet flush cost 4.8 cents.
4. The standard toilet uses 1.7 gallons of water per flush and the standard person uses the bathroom 8 times a day and 56 times a week.
Peeing in the shower once every day would save 11.9 gallons a week and save 619 gallons of water yearly.
5. By peeing in the shower you would save yourself from having to buy a roll of toilet paper every 50 days.
6. Believe it or not, peeing in the shower would also improve your sex life.
By squatting to pee in the shower, women are naturally strengthening their pelvic floor muscles which can lead to a tighter vagina and make a woman have be more sensual to orgasms.
7. 61% of Americans actually admit to peeing in the shower.
8. According to Discover, all mammals pee for approximately 21 seconds, meanwhile a standard shower heard uses 2.5 gallons of water per minute.
If your pee at the normal mammalian rate, only 0.875 gallons of water will leave your shower head in the time it takes you finish peeing. This is still less than a standard toilet flush.
So peeing in the shower can benefit you economically, environmentally and even sexually. I will not publicly announce how these statistics have changed my opinion on the subject. I would not want to subject myself to any type of public embarrassment, but I do hope you consider some of these things next time you get the urge when you're washing up!
