Why You Should Keep Your Political Opinions Off Of Social Media

Our country is in the midst of a lot of different tragedies. Terrorist attacks, unfavorable presidential candidates, endangered animals dying because of a lack of good parenting, rapists being sent to jail for horrendously short periods of time... it’s just a lot to handle. The more bad things that happen, the more Facebook updates I’m seeing that are basically novels about what that individual person thinks is right and wrong and I’m sick of it and I don't care.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s ok to share an article or say a few words about a political or religious issue, but I can’t take seeing all these long political statuses anymore. I fully respect every single person’s opinion no matter what it may be, but I didn’t ask to see it.

I understand that everyone has their own opinions and even I have shared a few political articles on my Facebook (heck, I even wrote one) but I wrote my opinions in an article so people could chose whether they wanted to read it or not. It’s fine to challenge and discuss politics and morals with other people, but do that in a different setting. Do it with your friends and family at a private gathering, don’t do it all over my Facebook wall so it’s all see when I’m trying to post pictures of last week’s tailgate. Everyone has different opinions and I didn’t ask or sign up to see my great aunt and her friend from college arguing about Hillary Clinton.

Social media is meant for connecting with others. Sharing photos of your last vacation, updating your friends on a new job you got, and posting pictures of your dog. That’s the kind of stuff I want to see. I want to see your dog, not my third grade classmate’s opinion of Donald Trump’s last debate. If I wanted to argue about politics, I’ll do it respectfully with people I know in the privacy of my own home.

With all the recent things going on, all I’m seeing are people’s view on gun control, and Trump going on and on about how President Obama didn’t use the term “radical Islam.” If you want to post about recent terrorist attacks, rapists, or the gorilla at the Cincinnati zoo, either share an article, say a few short and respectful words sharing your opinion, or maybe just send your condolences to victims affected by these instances.

Social media is supposed to be fun. Now, all I see every time I log on is people ranting about border control, Trump, and gun violence and being really rude and disrespectful to those with dissimilar opinions.

If you want to talk about politics, do it with your friends or join a chat room. Just leave it off of my social media page. I swear, if I see another person post anything about how this is America and “they can’t take our guns” my head will explode. We all have our own opinions and I truly have no interest in seeing all of them all over my timeline.

Please, America, let’s get back to social media being fun and not so hostile and start posting the things we all really want to see: food videos and pictures of your dog.

Thank you and good night.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
