When Marty McFly traveled to the year 2015 in "Back to the Future: Part II," I didn't see anything about social media being such an important factor to society. However, there was a part about hover boards, and I would have rather had those over Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram, eharmony.com, or whatever social media site you choose to get on. That's your business, man. To each their own.
But I would have rather had hover boards in this day in time instead of social media, because you can't post your "Person A is in a 'complicated relationship' with Person B" relationship status on a hover board, you can't post your daily drama on a hover board, and you can't post your political opinions on a hover board. And, if you did so happen to achieve doing one of these things while on your hover board, I would take it from you. You don't deserve it. They are meant to bring good, joy, and happiness into this world, kind of like things such as Facebook were originally intended to.
If I personally knew Mark Zuckerberg, there would be two things that I would be sure of. The first thing is that I wouldn't be writing articles for The Odyssey in order to win $20. The second thing is that I would be sure that when he created Facebook, he originally meant for it to bring the same good, joy, and happiness that the hover board from "Back to the Future: Part II" would have. (Could've just created the hover board, Zuckerberg.) Facebook was meant to be an online community where members of that community could communicate and share positive things in their lives. Instead, it has become a place of negativity and a completely negative thing in its entirety.
In all seriousness and outside of my reference to Marty McFly, Facebook has become an outlet for the bad in the world, and this outpouring of never-ending negativity causes me to ask the same question every single day: "What is wrong with people?"
I ask this same question when I see pictures shared of dead animals whose owners have mistreated them, when I see pictures shared of aborted fetuses, and when I read the comments made on them.
I ask this same question when someone has the audacity to talk about someone's child in a status, and the audacity to try to create trouble in someone's marriage through another.
I ask this question when I see others boast and brag about the material things that they own in order to make someone else feel jealous or envious.
I ask this same question when I see people arguing over petty things, and when someone feels the need to post something about arguments that should remain personal and private.
I ask this question when I see people arguing over politics without their argument even being centered upon the issues of the nation, but rather, whose political party is better.
I ask this question when I see people say, "It's my freedom of speech," but have no respect towards the freedom of others to disagree.
I ask this question when any type of controversy surfaces, whether it be something of little to no importance or something huge, and read the downright mean comments people make to those who do not agree with them. I also ask this question when people continue to drag out these controversies until they are entirely out of control.
I ask this question when the only time I see anyone offer means of help or prayer towards another human being is when they are going through a hard time or have been struck by tragedy.
Let's face it, people have become borderline obsessed with Facebook and social media. Through this, they have become borderline obsessed with sharing the doom and gloom of the world. While hiding behind the safety of a keyboard and a computer screen, we have forgotten what it means to be compassionate, how to respect the privacy of others, and how to remain respectful to those who do not share the same opinions as us. We live in an age of unlimited potential, and we are wasting it fighting, arguing, wallowing in self pity, and sharing the negative of the world on social media. I am not promoting the idea of turning our eyes away to the bad things that are happening around us, but can we not for one moment attempt to put the humanity back into humans?
