7 Reasons We All Need That Weird Friend

Weird friends make the world go 'round.

7 Reasons We All Need That Weird Friend

Throughout the last 20 years of my life, I’ve discovered that I cannot always go to the same person with any mood I’m in. I realized that when I am sad, I rely on a specific person to cheer me up. When I am happy, I go to a specific person to share the news with. When I’m in the mood to go out and party, I go to specific people to enjoy the night with. However, something else that I discovered along the way is that not everyone is like this. In fact, with that said, I realized that I am someone people go to with every mood, also known as “the weird friend.”

Weird friends have a weird way of tolerating everyone’s moods. We are always down to be a shoulder to cry on, to be ecstatic with you about your exciting news, and we are always down for a good night with you. As much as I love being the weird friend, I too, need a weird friend: weird friends make the world go ‘round.

1. We are constantly replied to with, “yes, it’s just you” when we ask, “is it just me, or…”

We have weird thoughts, but who doesn’t love someone with weird thoughts? We plot impossible scenarios in our heads and share them out loud when, most of the time, we shouldn’t. No one ever agrees with our weird thoughts, but we don’t expect them to. We aren’t offended when someone gives us the “wtf is wrong with you” look when we express these thoughts, because they make us who we are. Yes. This is why you need us.

2. We come up with the best ideas

I’m sure having a wine and dine night or going out to the bars like you do every other weekend is always a good time for you, but don’t you want a little more excitement in your life than that? We will provide this for you. We’d rather go jump in a toxic lake and risk getting sick than drink the cheap wine we’ve been drinking for the last year. We’d rather spend the $200 left to our name on tickets to skydive when we’re deathly afraid of heights. We’d rather roller blade to class on a rainy day and not care about whether or not we’re going to fall every five minutes. We prefer interacting with the animals at the party instead of the people. We odd. You need someone like us.

3. We always know what to say

I feel like you have to go through a lot in life to own up to being weird. I have always been known as the weird one out of the group, and I used to be offended. Now I take it as a compliment. You might think us “weird friends” won’t have a clue about any subject you bring to the table, but I feel like we make the most valid points. We take these topics, expand them, and come up with things you never would have, and you always end up agreeing with it, completely bizarre or not. We look at life differently than you. Our solutions to the world’s problems are beyond crazy, but we’re right about them. Everyone needs a chance to look at life the way we do.

4. We send the best Snapchats ever

I understand everyone sends that very uncomfortable Snapchat every once in awhile, whether it’s because they’re extremely bored, intoxicated, slap happy, or maybe even all three. But then there’s us. We are the ones who make every snap uncomfortable. We make them so uncomfortable that you don’t even want to even think about hitting the replay button. And as uncomfortable as these Snapchats are, you can’t live without them. You need a snap-chatter like us in your life.

5. We are polar opposites of you

We will probably crave chocolate chip banana pancakes at dinner when we denied them for breakfast. We sleep with the windows open in the winter. We take cold showers. We play happy music when we’re sad, and sad music when we’re happy. We skip while you walk. We put our face on the window while you avoid the dirty fingerprints on it. We blow bubbles in our chocolate milk in public while we watch you maturely sip yours through the straw (as you should). We are perfectionists at providing the most ugly face in a picture when we’re told to smile. You need our weird blessings in your life.

6. We are so good at cheering you up

When you’re sitting there upset and all alone, our appearance automatically makes you want to laugh, before we even open our mouths. You let us try and cheer you up because you know it won’t take much, whereas anyone else (the not-so weird ones) trying to cheer you up only make it worse. Our goofy personalities make you forget all the little things and enjoy the moment. We don’t take life as seriously as we should. You need a little bit of that in your life.

7. We're different

We don’t care what anyone thinks. We’ll publicly humiliate ourselves and admire the looks we get from people around us. We’ll do what we’re told not to and enjoy every minute of it, and we’ll do it alone. We’ll stand out: not in an attention seeking way, but in more of an embarrassing way, except it’s not embarrassing to us. The best part about being different is that we’re okay with it, and if we’re okay with it, you will be too. You need someone different like us.

I am well aware our weirdness comes off as immaturity to some people, but I don’t look at us that way. I look at us as the ones who were born blessed enough to add a little crazy to the world. We’re young-hearted. We don’t believe in growing up. Isn't the point of living to die young as late as possible anyway?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
