It is finally spring again, which means chapters across the nation will be hosting philanthropy events. From pie eating contests to dance competitions and golf tournaments, there will be plenty of things to get involved in. Even if you don't have the extra cash to donate to each cause, you should still make an effort to at least attend other chapters' events. Here s why you should take the time to go to as many events as possible.
1. It builds community. As a community of women, sororities have a lot of power if they just band together. However, it seems like instead we spend a lot of time trying to beat each other, whether it's during recruitment, at a fraternity's philanthropy event or for who is the top group on campus. If sororities all decided to join forces, we could do pretty much anything. So go to other groups' events, make some friends, and support the other women on your campus.
2. It's fun. I have never heard of a chapter doing a boring philanthropy event. Basketball games, dunk tanks, carnivals -- you name it. And at the very least, there will likely be food involved. So bring your friends and your sisters, and have a good time.
3. You will feel great afterwards. Took a break from studying to go to a philanthropy event? No problem! You supported a great cause, and you should feel great about it.
4. You will have higher attendance at your events. Attendance looking dismal for your upcoming fundraiser? Good thing you went to other events and can reach out to the women you met there (or the women that asked you to get pie'd in the face or to perform in their talent show). By being a Greek , you get the benefits of community!
5. Non-profits always need support. It may just be a few dollars on your part, but when a bunch of people all contribute a few dollars, the impact can be awesome! There are very few non-profits that aren't looking for more cash at all times and a little can add up to a lot!
6. Give Greeks a good name. There has been so much negative press about Greek life recently. While we clearly have a lot of things to fix as a community, we also know that philanthropy is one way that Greeks shine! So let's emphasize our assets and make philanthropy huge on campus!
Go to Penn and feeling inspired to attend some events? Here are just a few that I found on Facebook!
Take Back the Night (technically, not a Greek philanthropy event, but important).
