People always hear others incessantly making fun of the “sorority girl uniform.” You know the one: black leggings, a big sweater, Converse, equipped in full with a Starbucks cup in hand. Of course the term “common sorority girl” has a stigma attached to it as one who is very similar to other girls (“basic”) and no one wants to have “common” be an adjective to describe them. But here’s where they’re wrong; I think the term should be grasped in full, and girls should run with it.
Even though the sorority girls are termed “basic,” there’s a reason they continue to do what they do… they look good. When you go to a concert and see girls wearing Coachella-style outfits with flower crowns in their hair, you think “ugh of course,” but then you also find yourself wishing you came up with that outfit yourself. When you see pictures of girls’ rooms where they all have tapestries plastered on the walls, you think the same thing, but still find yourself wishing your room looked as good as theirs.
The aesthetic works because you don’t even need to be in a sorority to rock the look—it’s completely versatile! The outfits are comfy and casual, but always practical. If it didn’t work, girls would stop dressing in a way that will make others call them “basic,” but we don’t. You know why? Because again, it’s a good look. It’s like when you walk around campus and spot another girl with the same look, you two form this special bond. Similarly, there’s a “frat” look: salmon colored shorts with some sort of nautical themed shirt, but to the outsider, that looks like he’s trying too hard. But the “sorority girl” look is awesome.
So, like the dog in the picture above, girls should continue to absolutely kill the game and not care what others think—because at the end of the day, all that really matters is what helps college girls get the job done. And if that means being comfortable but still looking chic as girls bop around from activity to activity with coffee on-the-go, then why wouldn’t girls embrace that?
