DJ Khaled, aside from providing us with endless humor and catchphrases, gives us a plethora of valuable life skills by way of his Snapchat (@djkhaled305 for those who've been living under a rock). One of the things he always says that has stuck with me is "don't trust they." Now you may ask "who's they?" and I would respond as follows: They are those who do not believe. They are the negative people. They are the folks who did not believe, because of their negativity, that my New York Mets would end up not only making it to the postseason but also playing in their first World Series since 2000.
Now they didn't win. I get it. Honestly, I was just happy that for the first time in years I was able to root for a winning team. If anything, last season taught me that I can no longer accept any mediocracy from Queens. It taught me that the road to success has been paved and now we have to make it all the way to the end. The Mets have to win and they have to win now. Here's why they will do it in 2016.
One of the biggest concerns going into the offseason was the offense. After his historic postseason that included 7 homers in 6 games, second baseman Daniel Murphy traded the blue and orange for Nationals red. Murphy, a homegrown Met, had solidified himself as a consistent batter who was noted by some as "the toughest guy in baseball to strikeout." The Mets responded by picking up Neil Walker from the Pirates in exchange for pitcher Jon Niese. Similarly to Murphy, among Walker's marketable traits were consistency and a little power. Walker is also a big upgrade from Murphy defensively. The Mets also signed free agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to give themselves a boost in their middle infield depth.
Then came the question of whether or not Yoenis Céspedes would return after almost single-handedly providing the offense that led the Mets to their first National League pennant since 2000. Well, guess what? Not only did Yoenis return to the Amazins, he also signed a three-year deal. Of course, there is that opt-out clause which would allow him to become a free agent after one year, but we're trying to win now and Céspedes will definitely help in that department.
So let's review our list, shall we? Murph goes over to the capital? No problem! Niel Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera are signed. Get Yoenis back? Check. Already these Mets are looking a lot better offensively than the Mets going into the 2015 season (and those Mets went on to compete in the World Series). David Wright is also looking good to begin the 2016 season. It seems that the spinal stenosis is not bothering him, which is a great sign for the Captain and the team.
Now I have purposely left out the biggest reason why the Mets will repeat as champs in the East. If you follow baseball in the slightest, then you heard about our dynamic pitching staff. I mean, these guys can really bring the heat. With guys like Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard in your starting rotation, you're going to win a lot of games. Period. The Mets also expect right-handed fireballer Zach Wheeler back from the disabled list as early as July 1. At that point in time, manager Terry Collins intends to slide Bartolo Colon over to the bullpen to make room for Wheeler in the starting rotation. We're talking about a starting five consisting of Matt Harvey, Jacob Degrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steve Matz and Zach Wheeler!
The Mets, who were carried to a National League pennant by their lights out pitching and late season offensive eruption have all the tools necessary to repeat. They've reeled back the big Cuban fish that is Yoenis Céspedes and filled the hole left behind by Murphy phenomenally. And if the Mets pitching staff is half as electric as it was last season, it's all over for any opposing teams.
So you Nats fans can enjoy this great start to your 2016 season but try not to get too used to it because the Mets are coming for you. The East will be ours again. Now ride with us through this 162-game journey to success.
