Disclaimer: I am not supporting or endorsing either Presidential candidates in this article. If you are looking for an article on how I feel about the candidates and the general state of the election, that can be found here.
With the election just months away, the coverage of the upcoming Presidential election has and is going to skyrocket even though it already seems like it is the only thing you hear about. For the sake of my own sanity, I try to avoid as much exposure to this coverage as possible because this election really is ridiculous. However, it recently came to my attention that there might be people crazier, and dare I say more uneducated, than our two primary candidates: the American voters.
Now while this might seem like a bold statement, it has been proven numerous times. The most famous example comes from a segment from "The Daily Show" that has gone viral over the past couple of weeks. In the clip, a man interviews Trump supporters through an ideology test where they are asked questions on all different categories. The topics range from how they feel about a woman being president, religion, gay marriage and other relevant topics that have already played a big part in each candidates campaigns.
The answers that these people give are so unbelievable that the first time I watched it I thought the skit was scripted.
Unfortunately for me, there was no script and these people genuinely believed the downright horrific things they were saying. Let's start slow. One woman starts by saying that being president is "a man's job" and that women are "too hormonal" to be president because they would start a war over the fact that she had a hot flash. Yes, this woman literally believes that a female president would have the power to start a war just because she had a hot flash. When it is pointed out to her that only men have started wars she becomes very uncomfortable realizing that everything she apparently believes (and what she thinks the candidate she's supporting believes) is a completely sexist and unjustified stance.
And this is only just the beginning. Another woman states that she believes it is important to respect everybody's religions, yet, when asked if she respects Islam, she very matter-of-factly says no. I'll let this one just speak for itself.
I think the most extreme example of just how much these people don't realize how dumb they are is a man who is asked about how he feels about the treatment of women. He talks about how it is an "American ideal" to treat women with respect and that "extreme nations" go against that ideal. However, he sure has an odd way of reflecting this "American ideal" of respect for women through the shirt he is wearing.
And he saves the ultimate display of respect for women until the end:
While the video gives numerous other encounters, it is scary in the fact alone that the above examples are only a fraction of the amount of uneducated people were at this rally. I can also guarantee that we could find just as many uneducated people at a Clinton rally as well. No matter where this is taking place though, the fact in the matter is that it is terrifying that these people are supporting potential leaders without knowing what it truly means to support them.
Not only are the American people just parroting what they think the candidate of their choice believes, they have absolutely no idea what any of it means. They are uneducated on literally almost all the topics addressed in the video and if they were asked to give an explanation to any of their answers they wouldn't have one.
How can you blindly support someone who is just spewing words that you think you support when you haven't done any research? Do you actually know what respect for women is like? Do you know what it really means to support all religions? Do you know what it means to want equality for all races, sexes, religions, sexualities? The alarming answer is that most people don't.
I am extremely grateful for my right to vote, but it also scares me that so many uneducated people have that exact same right. As the American people, we should be beyond concerned that so many people are choosing not to educate themselves on what is going on in the world around them, so that they can choose a leader who can best represent us in the current world.
I get that the video was supposed to be humorous and that I might be reading a little too far into it, but the fact that we can call the ignorance of the American people humor is sickening. I hope that with everything that this election has brought on, it will start to open eyes that as a country if we are actually going to be "great" again or for anyone to "be with us", we're going to actually educate ourselves on who is actually going to accomplish all that.
