I don't think it needs to be said again but this election has clearly spun way out of control. I don't think there has been or will ever be another election just like this (or at least let's hope so). Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that the first year that I would get to vote that I would be so unmotivated to want to because the candidates and the American people have gone completely insane.
With this election we have completely lost sight of what the presidential election means because, quite frankly, this is not an election at all. What it has turned into is people wanting to decide between the lesser of two evils. Or if they aren't choosing between that people are going to vote for one person just to spite the other person.
That is not what a presidential election is about. Maybe something like this would've worked when voting for a high school superlative but when it comes down to choosing someone to lead our country for the next four, or possibly eight, years this is not how we should be choosing. We should be choosing the most qualified person who has shown the best leadership skills and have the best interest of all the American people in mind. It should be someone whose policies, morals and values you genuinely agree with.
If you feel as though you can stand behind either Donald Trump's or Hillary Clinton's policies, morals and values, then I commend you for not falling victim to this popularity contest. However, if you can genuinely say this, it makes me wonder how low our standards are now as Americans.
No one can deny for a single second that both Trump and Clinton have continuously proved themselves to be liars, criminals, childish, full of anger and unfit to lead a country in any way on numerous occasions. As a country we should not feel that we just have to accept that these people are what we look for in a leader. I mean, do we really want two people who engage in Twitter fights with each other to lead, protect and determine our future as a country? I know that is not what I want.
Not to mention that but both Trump and Clinton have brought the worst out of the American people. I have been appalled and sickened by how much hatred this election has brought out of people, from complete strangers to people close to me. It has turned people into bitter, stubborn bullies towards people who disagree with them even in the slightest and that is not what America was founded on.
We fought for our freedom so that we could have just that: freedom. If you don't like someone or disagree with them so much that you feel the need to verbally, emotionally, mentally, and in some cases, physically attack them, then you need to remember a little saying we all learned when we were children: If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.
If we take anything at all from this election, I think we should take it as a very big warning of the destructive path we're on as a country. We need to stop feeling the need to be so far to the right or to the left politically, but remember that no matter what, we are supposed to meet in the middle and compromise for the best interests of our people.
