The New Science of Epigenetics

Look down at your hands. Is your index finger longer than your ring finger? Is it different on both hands. Studies have shown that difference in length between your ring and index fingers are an indication of how much testosterone you were exposed to while in your mum's tummy. Interesting...but why the hell does this matter? Enter the New Science of Epigenetics.

It gets weirder. The ratio of your head to your shoulders. How long you leg bones are. These are all indicators of what your body needs to perform at its best. What time you wake up, the best times to eat, the best times to have sex. All of these are determined by your body type...and its been staring at us in the mirror the whole time.

For me I cannot stand running long distances. I always hated it. I think its mentally boring and kind of hurts my joints not to mention it was always punishment for fucking up in sports practice. I always felt a type of shame because I would just refuse to run when all my buddies would be doing a cardio sessions. But that's just it...if you ask the mainstream for cardio advice...most people will tell you to go run on a treadmill.

But running long distances is not the best form of cardio for everyone...it can even be harmful.

For me based off the length of my leg bones, where my center of gravity is, and a few other factors sprinting is a better form of cardio for me. When my body would hurt after trying to force myself to run a few miles it was actually feedback telling me running ain't my thang. And actually boxing is one of the best forms of cardio for my type. I have experiemented with this over the past few months...and I actually love boxing. I've gone my whole life never trying it but now cardio is not an issue because I know I don't have to touch a treadmill.

You have this sea of bad advice telling people to run to loose weight or to eat kale to be healthy but there's a problem. It is not specific enough. It is not specific to you. We now know base off epigenetics that what your body needs in terms of food and exercise is very specific to you and the stressors of your current environment and it changes daily.

Now don't panic. There are general principles that apply to most humans,, like eating lots of veggies, but it you are trying to diet or workout and it isnt sticking and you have no idea why...it's not because you're a piece of shit...there may be something else at play.

I've always hating squatting...which for guys means you're a pansy. But it turns out squatting is not very good for my body type. I'm more of a lunge fella and if we try to swim upstream just makes life way harder for us.

So I won't leave you hanging. How do you find out all this info? Well it's 100% free, takes about 20 minutes. All you need is a measuring tape and to enter a few questions about your eye color, skin, hair etc.

Based of your measurements, its tells you foods that are typically good for you body type. Exercises that are meant to make you feel great. It does not have to be as difficult as we make it. Just use a little science unique to you and health and fitness becomes a much more attainable goal.

Til next time,

-Dylan

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
