When it comes to getting close with someone you love, you often feel overwhelmed with happiness, excitement and frustration. The benefits of growing close to someone can make you feel secure, comfortable and happy, but when it becomes all too much, you often feel suffocated, restricted and stressed. Having a great friendship comes with years and years of knowing each other, and when a few years are squeezed into a few months, you can feel the tension build up as you get closer and closer to someone. The belt around the waist of friendship becomes too tight to bare and the buckle breaks, the leather rips and the damaged belt falls to the floor.
The symbolic idea that friendship is the waist in between the belt that is two people shows that not everything is meant to be fastened to the tightest it possibly can. A healthy friendship requires patience that one day the belt will fit just perfectly. With working out, dieting and exercising, you can get your belt to fit just the way it should, but those changed will not happen overnight. Losing weight or gaining weight takes time and patience and it requires determination and motivation, just like any great friendship.
Friends need space just like your waist needs a little breathing room when you put your belt on at the beginning of the day. Being around each other, constantly talking and becoming attached can create this zone where you feel like every second could be amazing yet fragile or constricting and destructive. The progression of friendship in such a short time period almost feels like an emotional high and it can almost be too much to take when you keep depending on it. Becoming dependent on each other can propose problems when your friend cannot be there every waking minute of the day anymore. People become preoccupied, busy or even distant because life catches up with them and takes them on a journey without any warning. Being able to thrive without someone is something that is necessary to make a connection when that person you would stay up till 3 a.m. talking to on the phone even more special.
When space is established, you can breathe, you can think without needing to consider others and you can do something that feels like it's just for you instead of feeling like you need to live your life for the other person. The breath of fresh air will fill your lungs and give you the strength and patience to try that belt again and make sure it fits this time, sometimes the tension can just be too much for one person's body.
