It probably does not come as a surprise to you that Donald Trump is not a feminist, but if you are still not sure, here are all the reasons why he is not. To start with, he constantly summarizes the value of a woman by her looks with comments like, "You wouldn't have your job if you weren't beautiful" and "A woman who is flat chested is very hard to be a ten." He even makes remarks about his daughter saying that he would probably date her if she were not his daughter or talking about whether or not she would develop boobs when she was only one year old.
On top of that, he makes remarks that reinforce gender stereotypes like when he said, "There are a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife." There should not be specific husband and wife roles. Each spouse should equally contribute to the team. The absolute worst of all is the fact that he contributes to rape culture and has been doing so for years. He sweeps aside accusations of rape by claiming the women are doing it for publicity or worse yet, he claims he has the right to a woman because of his wealth.
However, what might come to a surprise to you is that Hillary Clinton is in fact not a feminist either. She may claim to be, but as the old cliche goes, actions speak louder than words. Number one, just because she is a woman does not, I repeat does not mean she is a feminist. Two fundamental principles of feminism are that a women has the right to get an abortion and that gay marriage should be legal. However, Hillary was against abortion and gay marriage until it became popular to be for them. Another anti-feminist thing about Hillary is that she constantly plays the "woman card." Though it's about time we have a female president, gender is not the reason anyone should become president. Just like we should not vote for Trump because he is a man, we should not vote for Clinton just because she is a women. However, the worst of her offenses by far is that she slandered the women who had made accusations that her husband had sexually assaulted them. As a feminist, every accusation is supposed to be taken seriously, yet Hillary did not believe the women who accused her husband. Instead she has called them things like "trash" or "narcissistic looney toons" hoping people would not believe them. In my eyes, this is unforgivable.
Neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton are feminist, however both of them are running on a platform that they are advocates for women. As a feminist, this truly disappoints me considering how far we have come as a society. It is sad that out of all the candidates these are the two we chose. For those who wanted to vote for a feminist, the choice is just not there.
