Everybody has heard of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Perhaps a lot of people have even dealt with these issues or someone who suffers from one or more of these disorders. I have seen so many cases in which people ignore the extremity of mental issues and the problems they create. People even completely ignore mental issues that either they or someone they know has, which causes more harm than good.
The idea of being mentally unwell rather than physically is really overlooked in society because of the blatant fact that an individual is unable to physically see the issue affecting a person. It pains me to hear others say that mental disorders aren't as damaging as something physical, like breaking a bone. Just because you can't see or may not notice a disorder and how it is affecting someone as you would a broken arm or a leg, doesn't mean it is any less severe.
For depression, a person constantly has feelings that negatively affect them and can involve thoughts, plans, or attempts on suicide. People don't think of depression as an illness or something that really impacts one's actions. People have the idea that depression is just a phase that will eventually go away all on its own having been given some time, but that is almost never the case. Depression should be taken seriously and treated by medical professionals as one would for a broken bone. Someone suffering from depression should not have to feel the need to hide their problems due to judgment or the feat of argumentative ignorance by someone who believes depression is not a real issue.
Bipolar disorder is quite a prevalent and common disorder that is always seen by others as fake or a label to use to cover up someone's ability to become angry or sad more easily. This disorder is socially ignored more frequently for women who deal with bipolar disorder because people tend to connect the symptoms of bipolar disorder (like the daily mood swings) with a woman's menstrual or "PMS" cycle. Thus, making the women feel as though her disorder isn't being taken seriously or that she is insane. Bipolar disorder is something a person can't control without being given proper treatment and getting treatment is harder for those suffering because of the fact that those around them do not believe in the disorder and do not think it is a big deal.
Anxiety is one of the most overlooked and ignored disorders that occur within those who are twelve years old to as old as early thirties. This disorder makes it impossible for those who suffer from it to do things that seem easy to a common observer. This disorder is the most ignored in schools and classes with peers because professors and teachers generally do not care about or help those who are actually suffering from severe anxiety and anxiety attacks. This ignorance can lead to an individual with anxiety dealing with having uncontrollable episodes, fainting and/or passing out during presentations or having attention drawn to them, or having fits of sadness, rage, or intense fear if they are being forced to speak in front of any setting.
These three mainly ignored mental disorders must be viewed seriously and respected as much as a physical problem would be. If society accepts these mental disorders as severe as they really are, it will make it much more easier for those who suffer from mental disorders to receive support, help, and treatment.
