It's October, so you know what that means: a plethora of new horror films. It's one of the many reasons why I love October, along with the fall weather and pumpkin spice lattes (yeah, this is where I'm basic). However, horror movies are always a year-round indulgence for me.
I haven't always liked this genre, and it usually surprises people that I enjoy them because I am scared very easily. Seriously, if you jump in front of me behind a door I will scream. My love for horror changed when I started to watch American Horror Story my freshmen year of high school.
Sure I had some nightmares and moments contemplating why the hell I was making myself watch something like this. But, I learned to love the adrenaline rush when the big, scary monster jumped in front of the naive group of high schoolers.
The aspect or sub-genre I love most in horror is psychological thrillers. To me, these are the scariest because they are sometimes the most likely to happen. In other words, it's more likely that you'd develop some sort of paranoia or mental illness then chopped up by a clown. Moreover, these movies usually have a deeper and complex plot than the gory or supernatural ones.
Some of my favorites include: Shutter Island, Inception, and Silence of the Lambs. If you haven't seen any of these and love to have you're mind blown- I'd recommend seeing them.
Horror films also give me a reality check in a sense. I see that my fears in real life are sometimes as irrational as the plots in these movies. Thus, by association, I can ease my anxieties by touturing myself with a chase scene (you really don't want to see me watching that).
