Coming into college, I knew I wanted this time to be one of the best times of my life. I thought, what better way to meet people and get involved on campus than joining a sorority?
Going through sorority recruitment was something that took me completely out of my comfort zone. During the entire week of recruitment, I questioned why I even wanted to be in a sorority and if a sorority was even right for me. Toward the end of the week, I had made the decision I did not want to be in a sorority and dropped out of the recruitment process.
Fast forward a year later, and my sophomore year began. My freshman year was a great year, but little did I know that there was still a lot in store for me. When I began my sophomore year, I decided I wanted to try sorority life again, but not a traditional sorority. I wanted to be a member of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Incorporated. This sorority is part of the multicultural Greek sororities and fraternities on campus.
I have only been a member of Sigma Lambda Gamma for a short couple of months, but I have already become so appreciative, thankful and proud that I get to wear these Greek letters.
I love being a Gamma because with only 15 active members on campus, I am able to get to know each sister on a personal level. Each of these women have something so unique that they bring to our sorority. These girls have given me a home away from home and a place where I can be comfortable being myself.
I also love being a Gamma because of what we stand for. Academics, community service, cultural awareness, social interaction, morals, and ethics. Not only do we stand for these principles, but we try to incorporate them into our everyday lives by working hard in classes, being considerate of other people’s ideas and values and holding ourselves with confidence.
I strongly believe that being a Gamma has made me a more confident person. Being a Gamma means being a woman of distinction, and to be a woman of distinction, you have to feel and talk confidently. I have learned that I am a strong person and I can speak my mind when I need to. I know now that I am capable of so many things, and because of this sorority, I learned there is no need to be afraid of those possibilities.
Coming from a town that was full of different ethnicities, it was definitely a culture shock when I came to Kansas State, because there wasn’t as much diversity as I had hoped, but being a Gamma has shown me a whole different side of K-state. I have met people in other multicultural sororities and fraternities, and because these organizations are smaller in size than traditional sororities and fraternities, it makes it easier to make connections. I have also become a part of a community that it has given me my home within K-state. I have met people that I probably wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for this sisterhood.
There are so many reasons I am grateful to be a part of this organization, and I know that choosing Sigma Lambda Gamma was one of the best choices I have ever made.
