Why Greek Life Is More Than It's Made Out To Be

Where is the authenticity in the Greek system?

Why Greek Life Is More Than It's Made Out To Be
Alys Landeros

When I arrived at school to begin my freshman year of college, I made the decision to go through recruitment and become a part of the Greek Community. More often than not, I get confronted as to why I decided to Go Greek. This confrontation comes with hostility and misunderstanding, as most people have misconstructions of what it means to be Greek and join a sorority/fraternity. When I joined my sorority, I gained so much. I gained friends and experiences that I could not even comprehend until I was finished with the year, and looked back on what it all really taught me. College is an amazing experience, and the Greek System only added so much more to my first year. It added friendships, love, occurrences, and ultimately a family aspect to my college experience. I know first hand that the perceived “fakeness” behind the greek system is not true, because of all the authenticity it brought to my life.

The Bonds

This one is the first and foremost. The bond you create with 50 other girls going through the same experience as you is incredible. I have created friendships with amazing girls, who share similar goals and aspirations as me. We all feel inspired by our surroundings, and have a common goal of making the most of these short four years. These people I call my sisters are people who want to fully embrace themselves and life, and it is inspiring within itself. That kind of inspiration makes for the closest bonds that I cherish so dearly.

The Protection And Guidance

When I joined my house, I was met with people who immediately wanted to take me in and help me as I navigated through my first year of college. People who were always looking out for my best interest and were always there to pick me up when I was down. Whether it was girls in my own PC going through the same changes with me, or older members always there to offer a helping hand, I always felt like I had someone to turn to. Before my first day of school, I have 150+ girls who were willing to rally around me and that carried me through the year. I will never stop being grateful for that sense of love and comfort.

Always Encouraging Your Success

It is no secret that college is a big jump from high school. There is so much more independence from your teachers, class, homework and living on your own. It is easy to get overwhelmed amidst it all, or even slack off, but my chapter always encourages me to do my best when it comes to academics. They provide study tables, a quiet study room at the house, and support from our education chair. Not to mention, a number of girls going through the same classes, making it easy to ask for help from others or form study groups. Being in a house and having so much support very much improved my academic success in college.

The Community

Lastly, the community. When you Go Greek, you’re not just committing to your chapter. You’re joining a family of many other houses, a family of people who all want to come together in order to find lifelong friends and bonds that will carry them through college. I have met so many amazing people in the Greek Community, in and outside of my house. People who have made college better, and enhanced the quality of my life. I am so grateful to be a part of something so uplifting and authentic during my college experience and beyond.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
