In light of all of the TikTok and internet drama going on, I started wondering why I'm so invested in it. I've put together a few reasons why I personally think it might be so addicting.
1. It's someone else's drama. Everyone knows how interesting drama is. It's like a movie – you never know what is going to happen. I think deep down people love drama, but they don't like when it's their own, so it's easy to follow when it's someone else's.
2. It's like a throwback to high school. When internet stars are younger, it's so funny watching drama go down from an older point of view. It's like you understand everything going though their head because you once lived it.
3. It's a tease. You never get the full story and you never know if the story that you are getting is 100% true. It's up to your imagination to fill in the missing pieces. This makes it almost like a puzzle or a game; who doesn't love puzzles?
4. You don't face the lingering effects of the drama. It's almost as if internet drama goes away as quickly as it comes together. You're not hearing about it for weeks and weeks to the point where it gets annoying. It's usually a one day thing, occasionally a few days of entertainment, and then poof... it goes away.
5. Reading what other people think about the drama is another wormhole to fall into. On top of following all the drama, you also get to read about what everyone else thinks about it. It's so interesting seeing people's different points of view on drama. In my opinion, you can totally see people's maturity levels purely off of how they view other people's drama.
All of this being said I think that while internet drama can be entertaining it's important to remember a couple things. The first being that these are real people and real peoples lives. Everyone makes mistakes and has drama. While we the viewers aren't facing the effects of the drama the people involved in the drama certainly are. The second thing to remember is it's important to remember the real serious issues plaguing not only the world but the nation. Racism, COVID-19, Yemen, children in cages being gassed at the border, and missing indigenous women just to name a few. If you have the time to invest yourself into internet drama then you have the time to invest yourself into learning about world wide issues putting people's lives at risk.
