I’ve been told many times that organization is the key to success or one of the major stepping stones to getting there. If this is true, I might as well kiss any success goodbye. The last characteristic I have going for me is organization. Anyone can tell just by taking a half step inside my bedroom, trying to get inside of my car, or attempting to use the sink in my bathroom.
If you ask my parents or my college roommate (you’re the real MVP) why every aspect of my life is a chaotic disaster, they may say that it comes from a giant case of lazy or the thrill of playing hide-and-seek with everything I own. I, however, find happiness in every mess, and here’s why:
When I look at a mess, I am reminded how fortunate I am that I do not have the time to clean. I am reminded that the reason I have clean clothes thrown on my bed, wrinkled and folded inside out, is because I was in a hurry to find the perfect outfit to go out with my friends for the night. I am reminded that if I would have taken the time to clean up after myself, I would have been late, and no one wants to be named the late friend (although that is often me as well). How blessed am I to have nights out with my friends?
When I look at a mess, I am reminded that I am in the process of making my dreams come true. Not only am I in the process of getting a degree in order to get the job I’ve always wanted, but I am a student athlete striving to reach the top. When I see a mess, I know I didn't waste an ounce of daylight and tried to chase those dreams. I have my nose in my textbooks as often as I can and spend as much time in the practice pen as possible. I am so thankful I have the opportunities that allow me to have a messy room.
I love when I can walk into someone’s room, someone’s house, or get into someone’s car and see that everything isn't picture perfect. I love when I can see shoes scattered around the door, bundles of books on the coffee table, and dirty laundry in the hamper. I love when I can see water bottles rolling around under the backseat, practice clothes in a drawstring bag, and extra accessories laying on the counter. A mess is a sign that you’re either enjoying the life you’ve been given or in the process of creating the life you’ve always wanted.
Don’t get me wrong, there comes a point when a mess is too big and I must schedule the time to take care of it. But I will always be thankful that I am too busy to have a sparkling room.
Go out and chase your dreams until you those dreams become reality. Say yes to every adventure with your friends because no one know when the last adventure will be. Spend time relaxing with your favorite book and a strong cup of coffee (or tea). I promise you can clean another day. Be glad for today and leave your room in a mess.
