Imagine this: You’re at a family dinner. Or a gathering of some sort with family. The meal is going well, until your lovely Uncle Joe says something along the lines of this “How about that election?” And there it is. A nuclear bomb has been dropped.
The rest of the meal or gathering becomes a dispute of which candidate is better, the things the promote, the lies they tell. Back and forth, back and forth. At this point you either agree with what they say or are trying to withhold every opinion you are thinking inside you. You pray that it'll be over soon. Eventually neither side wins, the conversation slowly goes back to normal. But that 15-20 minute battle was more than enough.
It's not just with family. It's in Starbucks. It's at the mall. It's at the doctor's office. It's anywhere that has a tv or groups of people with phones. There's so many opinions and lies and confusion, and that my friend, is exactly why I don't like to write about politics. Well, you could be saying right now as you read this, "But Olivia, you are writing about politics right now." And yes, dear reader I am, and I am certainly not happy about it. And I am not going to tell you my opinions on the candidates or who I think is better.
I am honestly so baffled, horrified, and surprised by this upcoming election that I have no way to completely express my thoughts on each candidate. Every time I turn on the TV or a news website, I am faced with new opinions and evidence that pulls me into a million different directions.
This is the first election I am able to vote in. And to be quite honest, I am highly disappointed with it. There has been so much controversy with this election that I am truly considering not voting. I'm going to anyway, but there have been times when I just cannot wrap my head around even stepping up to a polling machine and choosing a candidate.
I hate getting involved in the discussion of politics. Some people live for it, but I certainly do not. I just don't like to debate about it. Give me something else to debate about, I will. But politics is just something I try to avoid talking about. I try to be as involved as I can in learning about our government and what's going on, as any American should have a basic knowledge of it. But I am not one to be getting in arguments about who should be president.
I would like to applaud the people who do put their opinion out there about it, I mean I'm all for freedom of speech, that's exactly what's letting me share my thoughts about it with you. Sometimes it can frustrating to hear opinions I don't agree with, but at the end of the day I just focus on what I think, because that's all that really matters.
So there you have it, that's why I don't like writing about politics, at least for now anyways.
