In a world of terrorist attacks, Trump for President, and innocent children dying, the news is a place of distress and uncertainty.
A couple of months ago when my beauty of an iPhone 6 came in, I eagerly downloaded the CBS News app so I could be sure to be an informed new voter, new adult, and a hopeful sophisticated citizen. After a few months of scrolling the daily news, I began to notice a trend; death. Everywhere around the world innocent people are fallen victim to terrorist attacks, religious deaths, and shootings by those who are meant to protect us. In one day alone, the first three article titles dealt with words like; murder, innocent child dead, gun war, terrorist, and shooting victim. And when I read those articles it was shocking to me exactly why these people were being killed. The reasons ranged from crazy to downright ridiculous. Some were killed for money, drugs, access to guns, and even just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. So from that moment on, I deleted my app and boycotted news outlets unless it was for a vague overview to stay somewhat in the loop.
For a world that supposedly values freedom, innocence, and the well being of those around us, it sure feels like we are doing something wrong. Our values actually look like criticizing, judging, and merciless killings. In a world where freedom is meant to be one of the greatest achievements we've accomplished, the passing of each day means more victims that have fallen to religious judgement. In a world where children are meant to be the next generation of renewal, they are dying because of senseless crimes. Even outside of the news outlets, judgements and criticism are the new "thing". High school is a breeding ground for awful comments, stereotypes, and judgements so hurtful people would rather die. Social media can put a fake name in front of someone out for vengeance or to pick up innocent teens.
And while the world is scrambling to decide who should be the next U.S. president I think we should be more focused on the God who put us here. The God who is really in control of our lives. If you have a love and earning for God, those scary titles become nothing but hope for the future. The one who will someday return to take us to place where words like murder, terrorists, and drug war don't exist.
So while I have boycotted news sources, I have learned that days where all you are reminded of is God's love, and those scary words do not appear across your screen; those are the happiest days.
"Our greatest comfort in sorrow is to know that God is in control"
