As human beings, we are really never content. Think about it. We always want more and even when we do our absolute best, there is always somehow something or someone better. And that is what we strive for. As human beings, we are wired this way. It is the way that we are meant to be. We are constantly craving more. We were created to grow and to evolve. We are constantly comparing our present condition to what the future could potentially hold and then we go after that! It is simply in our nature. Some may say that contentment is a choice. That it occurs when a human can recognize and really appreciate everything that they have and have accomplished. This sounds a bit broad and somewhat pessimistic. As humans, are very intelligent beings. We are fairly advanced and becoming even more so with time. So how is it that we are never content?
The reasoning is actually not so pessimistic at all. Since we are constantly craving more and wired to evolve, it really only makes sense. By nature, humans are constantly comparing themselves with others. This can be financially, emotionally, physically, mentally... really any way. We do not care how well we did on a project or how hard we worked in practice. Because there is always someone or something that we will see as have done better. Someone worked harder, ran faster, got further...and their outcome is somehow better than our own. It irks us and bothers us and in all reality, it motivates us.
This leads me to ambition as being another reason that we, as humans, are never content. We are constantly striving more and more to do better. To be better. Ambition sees no limits. Ambition makes our wants, needs, and dreams possible. Ambition makes humans be able to see the future much more clearly than anything else. We do not focus on the present except for how to better what we currently have. This seems to have been such a gift that humans have been given. The ability to want something so bad and be able to work toward that is amazing.
Lastly, humans really just have a strong need for change. We cannot stand routine or "burning out" if you will. We need to be able to keep moving forward to something different. Change is exciting to humans. Change represents hope that it is possible for more than what you think you are stuck in forever. Humans love to explore and seek adventure. We aren't beings who can bathe in boredom.
So when we really sit here and think about it, human beings really never are content. But this isn't as terrible and pessimistic as it sounds. We are never content because we know we can do more and have more. We know that we can achieve better and do it on our own. We are amazing beings that have been given qualities to progress and grow in nature. And this makes me very content.
