Who Am I? | The Odyssey Online

August 3rd, 2013 was the day that I would forever forget. It was a calm summer day in Illinois nothing going on like usual, besides the fact that I had cheerleading camp all day. I was a base, so my feet were forever connected to the mat. My flyer, who happened to also be my best friend, was doing a stunt where we had to flip her over and then catch her all at the same time. Well it was our groups turn to try this stunt and Alexis (the other base) and I flipped Delaney (the flyer) over. I got hit in the head. Then everything went dark. I remember small parts of the incident now but at the time I was pretty much dazed and confused. I was on the ground clinging to my head and tears streaming down my face. The girls all stood around almost not knowing what to do, but the choreographer who had seen this countless times before just told me to get up and take a breather. I went out in the hall to gather myself and get a drink of water. He had me sit out because he was unsure of the situation and how this all went down. I remember laying down and then it all went black again. I was nudged awake by the school nurse and put into a wheel chair. I was utterly confused on who this was picking me up and where the heck was she wheeling me to. She wheeled me down the athletic hallway which seemed to take forever asking me a bunch of questions. "Who's the president?" "What day is it?" "Who are you?" But I had no clue. I had no clue about anything. She called my Poppy because my parents were out of town on vacation. He walked through the door and I had no clue who he was. I had no clue who anyone was. I was taken to the hospital where they did MRI's and CT scans. Thankfully, I had no internal bleeding but the doctor diagnosed me with a major traumatic brain injury (concussion). I was hit pretty bad in my right temporal lobe with my friend's shin/calf area. I had very bad amnesia and the neurologist said that I had lost about 8 years of my lives memories. Today, I have comeback from my concussion. To this day I still don't know what I do remember or what I don't remember. But I was resilient and came back from that major setback in my life.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
