Your mom probably has some in the back of her closet from the '80s, and your dad probably wore them playing baseball in the '70s. So why, all of a sudden, is the new/old/classic trend of white converse incorporated into every sorority bid day theme? Why does everyone wear them to class?
After experiencing a dramatic change in wardrobe after stepping foot on a college campus -- I finally succumbed to purchasing large t-shirts and mid-calf socks -- I've suddenly noticed that girls are switching out their neon Nike Frees for something more casual. If you haven't bought them, you want 'em, and if you have them, all you do is wear 'em.
Being the tall girl my whole life definitely has some disadvantages. While all my friends dressed in their circle skirts, crop tops and cute wedges for a night out, I'd stare at my shoe closet and wonder when I'd be able to finally buy an acceptable pair of shoes that completed my outfit, but didn't make me five inches taller than every boy I'd meet. When Pinterest started to blow up with girls sporting bright, white and gleaming Converse, I knew I had no choice but to buy a pair.
The shoes that I had not worn since the eighth grade had finally come back into style, and I hadn't the slightest clue why. Why only the white color? Why are they suddenly okay to wear with anything? Who started this? I didn't know, but they seemed to work. And with that, I present to you a few reasons why college girls have started tying up the laces and spreading the Converse epidemic campus-wide.
1. If you spill on them, they aren't ruined. My Converse have lived through many punch-colored spills and multiple ketchup stains from lunch at my sorority house. Bleach is your friend, but throwing them into the wash will do the trick; they will be bright as new.
2. They go with anything. Want to wear them to class? Done. I've learned that these babies will go with my Nike shorts and large t-shirt, any day. Have a themed date party to go to and don't have shoes to wear? Can't go wrong.
3. Boys seem to prefer them. I don't know what it is, but I hear boys throw out an, "I like the Chucks," more than any comment about how your nice heels are.
4. They're comfortable, and sort of flattering. College kids prefer comfort over anything. These shoes don't even need breaking in, you can just wear them and go.
Sorority girls everywhere, think about the options you have. As a girl who was forced to buy her first pair for recruitment, I can say it was a beautiful introduction to what the past held in fashion and what the future holds for a newer generation that has decided these shoes are cool again.
