This week, First Lady Michelle Obama sat down with Oprah Winfrey. After discussing the up’s and down’s of residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Winfrey asked the First Lady how she feels about being labeled an “angry black woman.” This stunned me and I turned up the volume on my phone so that I wouldn’t miss a single word Michelle said.
“That was one of those things where you sort of just think. ‘Dang, you really don’t know me.’ ” - Michelle Obama.
White America doesn’t know us but they insist on dictating what we wear, how we speak, where we live, the education we receive and how we hold them accountable for what they’ve done. Surely anyone who truly knows us would understand why there are more than a few ruffled feathers.
“American History” only highlights three black people. Martin Luther King, Malcom X and Rosa Parks. Compare that to the hundreds of white people, some of which have contributed far less than African Americans at the time. For instance, Paul Revere. He rode a horse through the streets screaming about the British like nobody else saw the big ass boats in the harbor. To know us, you have to know our history. We have one month, you’ve got eleven. You don’t know us but we know you.
