According to Oxford Dictionary a catcall is “a loud whistle or a comment of a sexual nature made by a man to a passing woman.” However, in my eyes a catcall is nothing but a degrading remark that needs to stop. Catcalling has been around for a while, but it just doesn’t make sense to me why it’s still around. Do guys really believe that whistling and shouting comments at women will make them want them? I don’t think any a woman has ever thought to herself, “Wow I bet that guy whistling at me really cares about my personality.”
Maybe guys think they’re complimenting us when they shout, “Hey Baby give me a smile,” while simultaneously staring at her butt. Maybe they think all girls are attracted to a-holes and they feel like that’s the best way to land a pretty girl. Catcalling isn’t always just a whistle or a meant to be compliment. There are other forms such as coming up behind a woman at a party, grabbing her hips, and thinking they are entitled to dance with you.
What’s even better is if you ignore the remarks or politely turn away the dance, you’re titled a bitch and get yelled at for walking away. Regardless of the form all catcalling is unattractive and needs to stop. I’d hate if I ever have a daughter that she would think “Hey sexy” and “Damn girl” are the only compliments she deserves.
In the words of the wonderful Cristina Yang, "Oh screw beautiful! I'm brilliant! If you want to appease me, compliment my brain." Don't get me wrong women like a compliment about their looks every now and then. However, if you really want to impress her compliment her on her personality, her hard work, her mind, or anything else similar. We are women, we are not dogs, so please stop whistling at us.
