President Trump has reason to be happy this week. He was acquitted of the two articles of impeachment sent over by the House of Representatives. The final votes for each article were 52-48 and 53-47. The only senator to break party lines was Utah Senator Mitt Romney, who made an emotional speech on the Senate floor before the vote. Romney said, "I am aware that there are people in my party and in my state who will strenuously disapprove of my decision, and, in some quarters, I will be vehemently denounced." The former presidential candidate voted guilty on the article concerning Abuse of Power. The second article of Obstruction of Congress, broke along party lines, with Romney voting not guilty.
Swing vote senators that were once in the spotlight for being on the fence, broke along their party lines. Moderate Democrats like Joe Manchin, Doug Jones and Kyrsten Sinema all voted to convict the President. Republican Senators Murkowski and Collins both voted to acquit the President.
The vote marks the end of what has been months of the Trump impeachment hearings. From committee hearings in the House, all the way to the vote in December, and to now, the third impeachment process in our nation's history has come to a close. While it wasn't a surprise that the President was acquited, we now have watched history play out on our tv's and phones.
