Back to the Future: Part II: What They Got Right and What They Got Wrong

October 21, 2015 might seem unfamiliar to most of the world, considering it has never happened, but for some people it's extremely significant. It is on this day in good 'ole 1985 that Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown left their safe and comfortable town, Hill Valley, and traveled to the future in the iconic movie Back to the Future: Part II.

The 1989 Back to the Future sequel made some astonishing predictions about what was in store for us in the future. From TV tech, to smart phones, to holograms, modern life as we know it accurately reflects what McFly saw in Hill Valley in 2015.

In the movie, Marty and Doc Brown attempt to fix a mistake that altered the natural course of time, which only created a numerous amount of other messes they had to clean up. What is interesting about Back to the Future: Part II is seeing how accurate the writers imagined 2015 to be like. Although we unfortunately still do not have flying cars or floating hoverboards, the movie did get a couple of things right.

Here's a look at what Back to the Future: Part II got right, and what it unfortunately, for us, got wrong.

Hoverboards: No

Despite the fact that Lexus did come out with a commercial for a hoverboard, these magical floating skateboards still don't exist. Thankfully, for now, we have the HoverBoost HoverBoard to hold us over until the Hill Valley innovations come through.

Video Chatting: Yes

A crucial scene in the movie is the scene where older Marty video chats through his television screen with his boss. Eventually, in the scene, Marty is fired, but that's beside the point. Back to the Future: Part II predicted that by 2015, we would be able to video chat with our friends (Skype, FaceTime, GoogleChat, etc).

Smart Houses: Yes

Despite their unpopularity to the general public, smart homes do exist. In the future, Jennifer, Marty's girlfriend/wife, opens the door to her home using just a fingerprint. Smart home tech of today includes, smart thermostats which assure your rooms are being heated and cooled properly, smart speakers, like the Amazon Echo which has a number of voice activated features, and smart locks that allow you to lock and unlock your doors just by using your smart phone.

Fashion: Yes and No

We still haven't seen the dope power laces that Marty wears in the movie, but according to this video, we should be seeing power laces within the next year. The movie did get the concept of everyday athletic apparel down, as well as, fashion revivals appearing in our clothes today that take inspiration from other decades and time periods.

The Cubs Winning the World Series....

I guess we will just have to see about that one.

For your entertainment pleasure, watch Doc Brown and Marty McFly discuss, themselves, what Back to the Future: Part II got right.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
