What I Did Over Spring Break

The vibes I’ve gotten from my friends from high school is that a two-week spring break in college is unheard of. But I think that it’s the perfect amount, and I don’t know what I would do with only one week of a break from everyone. Of course, this is coming from a private school gal who has always had a two-week spring break, so I may sound a little biased. Also, my entire first week was filled with my sport -- sailing day in and day out, either at regattas or practicing or driving to the destination, and my extra time with my teammates was a lot to handle. Maybe that goes back to my being an only child for most of my childhood, so my need for alone time is natural.

Anyway, after a week filled with the same 22 people and varying temperatures on the water, I arrived home to a half-empty house. My fifth-grade brother, who attends the same private school as I did, has the same break as my college, which one would think is convenient, except for the fact that he was the one in Florida with my mom. My mother is super smart when it comes to budgeting and finance and frugal spending, but she’ll usually plans our family vacations between odd days, such as this two-person trip which was from Tuesday to Tuesday, right in between the two weeks. My sports commitment trumped my desire for constant 70 degrees and the beach, so, naturally, I was unable to go.

Although I must say, it was lovely being home with just my dad and our Maine Coon -- I had time to settle in and do my own thing before the significant forces of my mom and brother returned. The volume in the kitchen usually turns up when my brother and I are both home due to sibling wrestling and mean jokes and the speed at which our family’s life goes becomes much faster because of my always-busy mother and her scheduling and organizing.

A movie this night, a milkshake that night, dinner here and a grocery store run there, and before my dad and I knew it, the house was full again. For me, the last fourth of break was filled with only a couple things. Laying in bed, for one. Oh, do I enjoy my bed! Honestly, my bed at school isn’t half bad; I think I rejoice to the thought of just chilling under the covers (lava lamp on at home.) Whether I was napping or stressing over my computer science assignment, my time did not go to waste on the queen-sized bed. Side note, that computer science assignment, although due at the end of the first week back at school, has been an enormous burden on my shoulders, and I only wish there were fulltime TAs (teaching assistants) to help me and my friends with it.

A couple meals out with my mom, a doctor’s appointment and a lot of catching up on T.V. later, it’s already the weekend that I have to go back. Sigh. Although I am looking forward to dressing up for Easter, I will have to move all of my spring clothing into my dorm room and prepare for two more months of school! Oh well, so does everyone else. I really took the relaxation part of break seriously, I would say, but I’m not a hermit; I did go to one party with friends -- the sailors, of course, I guess I can’t go too long without ‘em. Hope your break was relaxing, too!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
