Steeped in tradition and often viewed through a prism of nostalgia, the Green Bay Packers have succeeded against all odds in a tiny and remote market. But the Packers are not to be underestimated; they have proven to have one of the most special football towns in the NFL, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s been almost a year since I visited Green Bay (a.k.a the real happiest place on earth), and I want nothing more than to go back one more time. There’s just something about Green Bay that makes the two-hour flights, the three-hour drives and the insanely cold temperatures all worth it.
One of the many things loved about the Packers is the history behind the team. On August 11, 1919 the Green Bay Packers, one of the most iconic professional sports teams, was born. The oldest team in the NFL started out with a small idea from a man named Curly Lambeau and a group of 20 dedicated men, who simply wanted to play football. With the financial support of the Indian Meat Packing Company where Lambeau worked as a shipping clerk, the Packers were officially formed. After running out of money in 1923, Curly formed a partnership with other men to sell over 1,500 shares for five dollars. Today the Green Bay Packers have over 300,000 stockholders and remains a non-profit professional football team. Just by looking at this, it is clear that the Packers were not formed from the pockets of many wealthy executives, who thought owning a professional team would be profitable. The Packers were born from nearly 100 years of blood sweat and unequivocal dedication. And as a fan I couldn't be happier to see this history.
This historic town has a special bond among itself. With a population of barely over 102,000 people, the town is known to have one of the most devoted communities. Since 1960, Lambeau Field tickets have always been sold out! In fact, the waiting list for season tickets are over thirty years long. For example, the man who sat next to me in my first Packers game explained to us that his family has had the same season tickets for three generations. To Packers fans, supporting their team is not simply an event that happens on Sundays. It is a year-long, perhaps a generation-long, endeavor. You see, the green and gold mean more than just a football team; it is more the merging bond that is Green Bay, Wisconsin. Just visiting "Titletown" will allow you to feel the great energy of an entire community that lives and breathes their Packers.
Frankly, the best parts of Green Bay are the special experiences you gain from being with the community, but also dealing with the insane temperatures. Call me crazy but its true! I remember my first Lambeau game: the temperature was negative 10 degrees. My family and I had only packed thin tennis shoes, and understandably our feet were numb throughout the game. But when fans are at Lambeau, the temperature starts to become a reason why they love being there. Just imagine that the bleachers are too cold to sit on, so you end up simply standing. It eventually becomes so cold that you start dancing along to the music. Eventually just being there with all of the other Packers fans in the cold temperatures, allows you to experience the real effects of the "Frozen Tundra". This experience truly adds to the wonders that come with Green Bay.
I truly believe that it is impossible to spend time in Green Bay and not leave with even a small amount of love for the town and its team. Small communities are the bread and butter of America, and when you have a historic city so rich with community devotion and cool experiences as Green Bay, Wisconsin, you can't help but want to go back year after year. #GoPackGo
