Like a lot of people, I usually set a bunch of goals to accomplish over the summer while I get a break from school. I always have long lists of books to read, shows and movies to binge-watch on Netflix, things I want to do with my friends and places to visit. However, trying to get fit is usually at the top of my summer to do list. I get so busy with school, meetings and life during the school year that I tend to slack on working out more than I care to admit. Hey, it happens. This summer I have been trying to work out as much as I can and be more healthy in order to be a better, happier person. It’s not as easy as I wish it were, but I’m sure many of you can relate.
Here is what the struggle of getting fit (well, for me, at least).
Eating healthy can be hard.
Trying to cut out sweets, junk food and processed crap is really hard, because I have a sweet tooth, and everything seems processed these days. Filling my diet with more fruits and vegetables has been good for me though. I’ve also gotten into trying different protein bars (healthy people do that, right?). No surprise, most are gross, but I did find one that is delicious — Think Thin’s brownie crunch, if you’re interested. I’m still wondering why ice cream and pizza can’t be healthy.
Working out after a hiatus is not fun.
I was really out of shape when the summer started. I’ve never been some super-star athlete, but there was a time I once was fit. Your endurance is low when you aren’t consistently active. My horrible joints are a problem sometimes when I work out (I tore an ACL and both meniscus in one knee when I was in high school) and can be discouraging. When you feel like you’re dying from a workout it’s easy to want to give up.
But building up your strength and endurance is fun.
It’s really rewarding feeling your body start to get stronger. Muscle forming and being able to push myself further in workouts makes it all worth it, and I’m sure my body is thanking me for eating better.
My love for Diet Coke is too strong.
I know it’s terrible for you, and I’m trying to cut back, but it’s just too good. The struggle is real.
Having someone to motivate you makes it easier.
Luckily my mom is really supportive with getting me a gym membership, and she’s into eating healthy herself. Sometimes having someone keeping you accountable is tough, but it’s tough love. You just might need a little push.
The gym can be intimidating.

Remember to treat yourself.
Every now and then you deserve something special. Hard work deems a reward.
