What to Know Before Starting Your Senior Year

Because you're NOT too cool for school

What to Know Before Starting Your Senior Year

1. Go to the football games

Okay, I know this is kind of a given but if anyone knows me they know what I do best on a Friday Night, I work. I never went to one football game during my senior year and that is something that I will never get back, a cherished sport at my school. Senior year is the time when you're supposed to go to football games, act absolutely nuts in the student section, dress up for all the ridiculous themes and most importantly spend time with your friends that you will be leaving at the end of it all. When it comes down to it here's one thing I learned....football games > work.

2. Have a Blast During Spirit Week

C'mon...it's your senior year. After all, who doesn't want an excuse to dress tacky or wear Hawaiian apparel to school? Don't dress to impress, dress to take pictures with all of your friends and make memories. Go all out because if spirit week at your school is anything like it is at my school, you know its the best week of the school year (other than the breaks).

3. Senior Year is NOT a Fashion Show

You've dressed up and worn makeup EVERY DAY since your freshman year. It's time to give yourself a break and wear those sweatpants and t-shirts. Wake up a little later and throw your hair up and go. You've been in school with some of these kids for twelve years now, I can assure you that nobody (even that guy you had a crush on in the third grade) is going to be worried about what you look like. Odds are everyone will be dressed the same way. It's about time you give yourself a break, after all, you've earned it after years of spending hours on your appearance.

4. Apply Early

If you know you want to go to a four year university right off the bat, I cannot stress enough how applying early is important. Most schools can give you a decision by Thanksgiving if you take the time to apply early to schools. It'll take some stress off of you if you know where you're going early because it gives you more time to plan and also, who doesn't want to be the first of their friends to know where they're going in the fall?

5. Go to Prom

Let's face it. Prom isn't the best night of anyone's life, unless you live under a rock. However, it is your senior year so go buy a dress that's way too expensive, grab some friends or a date, go to an overpriced restaurant and have fun. You'll regret it if you don't go.

6. Don't let Senioritis Get the Best of You

Do well in your classes your senior year even if you've already been accepted somewhere. It's actually more important than ever if you've been accepted because colleges can revoke your acceptance at any time. Go the extra mile, make that three page research paper four, do your community service and hire a chemistry tutor (trust me, you'll need it).

7. You'll Get a Little Sad When Second Semester Rolls Around

Yes, you still have a whole eighteen weeks to go, but you never really believed anyone when they told you it would fly by. It does fly by and soon you'll be walking across the stage. Enjoy every moment of your second semester, participate in every activity possible--especially if they are senior exclusive. Make the best of your last semester in high school ever.

8. It Really Does Fly By

Your parents, teachers and friends always told you, but you never really knew what they meant until now. Soon you'll be off on your own so hang out with your friends, spend time with your family and make a lasting impression on your teachers your senior year. Go to every event and participate all you can in your senior year. This is your last year in high school, make it the best one yet.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
