Dating a musician is both a blessing and a curse wrapped up into a package deal. I quickly learned the ropes to dating a drummer earlier this year but what if I said I was dating two musicians? Before you think I am a crazy person, let me clear this up. I have one boyfriend. When he isn't being the drummer for The Indigos, he is an EDM DJ and producer known as Ejion.
When I realized he was an EDM DJ and producer, first I Googled what that meant. If you don't know what EDM is, it stands for "electronic dance music." Which is as literal as it sounds, it's electronically made music that appeals to senses. It's different than other forms of music as it doesn't have to have words and can be made right at a computer.
Once I figured out what EDM was I found myself at shows and events, thrown into a culture and scene that I didn't quite understand. A few of my friends weren't interested in the music but EDM is something you either love or you hate. Mostly I went out to shows by myself and I didn't quite fit in. Why was everyone wearing glow stick bracelets? But the more I came out to the shows, I learned to understand the scene more. My defining moment took place on my 21st birthday when two typical frat boys felt the need to slander my boyfriend, the DJ. With a Bloody Mary in one hand, I tapped one on the shoulder and asked a simple question. "Do you have a problem with the DJ?" The rest is history and I received an applause.
Girls that get to date DJs or anyone that even knows one, are luckiest people in the world. We are in the presence of a genius! Okay, maybe that's stretching the truth. When you are around a producer 24/7, you really get to see the drive put into the creation of the tracks. For example, the ability to take whale sounds and remix that into a track is commendable.
Dating an EDM DJ opens the opportunities to go out and meet new people. You may find yourself in a town where you don't know anyone but make friends with a fellow DJ, The Flourish. The epitome of EDM style with multi-colored dreadlocks and snake-like dance moves, he's a talented guy I would have never met if it wasn't for dating a DJ. It's funny how you meet people and don't really talk at first but now they fill your Facebook newsfeed with the craziest memes.
It's not always easy to find others that produce and create EDM but when you do, latch on. You can always learn something new from someone in the same trade. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. There is always room for improvement and growth especially in something as intricate as EDM.
You have to support the other DJs too. It's just how the scene works. It would be a lonely world if DJs didn't interact with each other. Support can be as simple as turning on their SoundCloud and letting it play for five hours, not that I do that or anything. When you start to meet other DJs, you also meet their girlfriends. Which makes life a little easier at shows. I am lucky to have T-Roub who also has a supportive girlfriend that goes out to all the shows.
Being in a relationship with someone that has a creative mind is one of the best things. A creative mind is an open mind. EDM is about experiencing and experimenting. What I've learned from dating a producer is that music moves the soul. Music opens the opportunity to meet others, to share a bond that doesn't need words. Music is a glue that sticks people together at a bar on a cold December night. It doesn't matter what kind of musician you date, a rapper or a fiddler, musicians are the best people to be in love with. They speak a language that all can understand.
