Returning Home After Your First Year Of College Has Both Ups And Downs

I love being home, but I can't wait until I can go back to school.

My first year of college sure had its ups and downs; meeting people, losing people, and making friends that will last all four years or even a lifetime. It's hard to leave people you've hung out with for the past nine months, and go home to your family and friends from high school. I'm not saying I don't miss my family and old friends, but it's hard going home after being in a routine for so long.

Each night, I would hang out with my big in my sorority, as well as one of my friends in a fraternity and his big. We started hanging out near the end of last semester, and those nights were the best. Now, our only form of communication is our group chat on Snapchat.

Coming home also turns my relationship with my boyfriend into long distance. I went from seeing him every day to only being able to talk over text, online, or on the phone.

Even with all those downsides, I love the freedom of college. You get to go to bed when you want and not have your parents nag you to sleep. Also, you can eat when you want and whatever you want. The one bad thing is you can't use the excuse "my parents said no" when someone asks you to hang out and you really don't want to.

However, coming home does have its advantages, one being no class and no homework. Unlike high schoolers, college students don't have assignments to do over the summer. We can actually relax which is great, unless you're taking summer classes.

Another perk is being able to make money by having a summer job. I like how it causes me to get up early every day, which keeps me from messing up my sleep schedule.

Being home has also allowed me to catch up with family. I always enjoy hearing about what's new in my brother and sister's lives, as well as in my parent's lives too.

Next, home has a lot more privacy and is more sanitary because you know where everything in your house has been and who has touched it.

Lastly, I was also able to have access to a car when I needed it or wanted to go somewhere. Being a freshman in college, you had to enter and win a lottery to have a car on campus. I didn't win that lottery, and it made me realize how lucky I was to have a car at home.

Also, being in Farmville, there are no malls. I'm one of those girls who loves going to the mall, so being home allows me to shop as much as I please.

Overall, I love being home, yet I can't wait until I can go back to school in just a few shorts month. My advice is to enjoy being home while you can because you might miss it once school starts back up.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
