I don’t remember what it was like to actually become a big sister, considering my brothers were born when I was only a year and a half old. However, over the years, I’ve learned what it really means to be a big sister. I’ve learned about the sacrifice it takes in order to be a good example for my younger siblings.
1. It means that you are their #1 go-to
You’re their go-to for anything and everything that goes on in their lives from school work to relationship advice to how to properly load a dishwasher. They look up to you for every ounce of wisdom that you have.
2. It means that you are just the person to give them the kick in the butt they need
At some point, all siblings get off track and need to be put back in line. You’re the only one they’ll listen to. You’ll tell them how it’s going to be and they fall right in line—after all, you are the natural-born leader of the bunch.
3. It means that you are their shoulder to cry on
From the time they were born, you were always there. You are the one person that has always been on their team, been their #1 fan (even when they least deserved it). You’re the one who’s always down to go grab some ice cream and a movie just to cheer them up.
4. It means that you will always be their forever friend
You were their first friend, and you will always be their best friend. Even though you may not see each other every day or talk to each other every day, or have separate lives, you will always be the first one they go to. Even though they never admit to it, younger siblings wouldn’t know what to do without you in their lives.
Being a big sister is a big job that has even bigger shoes to fill. You don’t realize it until you’re older, but being a big sister gives you a huge responsibility. In a sense, you have to grow up a little sooner just so you can take care of your younger siblings and take them where they need to go. Big sisters have an incredible influence over their younger siblings, whether they realize that or not.
I wouldn’t trade being a big sister for the world. Being a big sister has been such a blessing in my life, one that I didn’t realize until recently. Yes, my siblings drive me absolutely bonkers and make me as mad as a hornet, but I love them more than life itself and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. I’m so thankful to my parents for making me a big sister—I wouldn’t know the joy of being one if they hadn’t given me siblings.
Hold your siblings close; after all, they are and will always be your most prized relationship.
