School spirit -- you either have it or you don't. Some schools have more school spirit than others, but how much school spirit do you have? Here at UNCW, some students find it hard to have school spirit when our athletics aren't promoted as much as other schools. But just because we aren't ranked the number one football team in the SEC doesn't mean we shouldn't be proud to represent our school. You should want to "feel the teal" for your four years as a Seahawk and promote our sports just as much as any other school would. If you find you are lacking in the school spirit category, here are some tips to help you find your pride in being a Seahawk.
Go to a game.
That's probably the most obvious option. How are you going to know anything about UNCW's sports if you haven't even been to a game. As a part of the dance team, I get to stand on the sidelines at every home basketball game and let me tell you, some games get just as heated as a classic Carolina v. Duke game. Sure, ESPN's college game day may not of shown up for pre-game activities, but you can win free things by participating in fun halftime events, score some free groceries from Harris Teeter, and better yet, you don't have to watch the game from the nosebleed section. That's a plus of having a smaller coliseum; you can get up close and personal with the players. Many dancers have gotten tackled while on the sidelines. Don't believe me? Come to a game.
Own some teal.
Do you even go here? If you aren't so much of a sports fan, you can still support the school by simply wearing the school colors. In case you didn't know, UNCW's official colors are teal and gold, however, the navy blue is questionable.
Stand up for us.
We all have those friends who do go to larger schools where winning is a big deal. Don't let them talk down about UNCW because we do not have a football team, or our basketball team doesn't have a NCAA tournament title. They are the ones who should be jealous. We've got the beach and a carefree environment where we don't beat ourselves up over a loss. Besides, aren't you glad people don't bash our basketball coach like they did when Roy Williams walked out of that game 10 seconds early because his team was losing? Say that next time your friend is bragging about how good their sports are.
Be proud.
Overall, be proud to be a Seahawk. You applied to this school for a reason, whether it be strictly for an academic program or for the environment. This school makes you happy and there's no where else you would rather be than here at UNCWonderful.
