The morning after was nothing like I had expected. Throughout this campaign trial I did not believe a single bit of it; Trump was simply not going to elected (at least that’s what the polls were telling us). Maybe I had more faith in America than I really should have. I didn’t think we could be so stupid as to elect a racist, sexist, misogynistic business man to lead our country. But we did; and this election has taught me more than a few things about our country and our society. I may have underestimated the power of the white male dominance, but one thing that is for sure is that, us women will never be good enough.
What type of message does this election pose for young girls in our country? To put it simply, you can be 1,000 times better than any male, but I’m sorry to break your delicate little heart, that will never ever be enough. This is a terrible message to send to young females, but it’s the truth. Whether it be in business, politics, or even art institutions, us women will almost alway be below our male counterpart. We will have to fight in order to surpass the males, but will there ever be a real chance for us to succeed?
Few thought this would really happen, but a woman with decades of experience and a refined platform was clearly no match for our white male billionaire with no political background. It’s just sad to say that you will never be enough because of who you are. As women we face multiple disappointments; we’ll be told we can’t become scientists because the men will be smarter than us, we’re made fun of for being too girly and not good enough to play sports with the boys and we’ll most definitely not receive the promotion we want if there’s a male colleague competing against us. In a country that promises equality for all, this is a let down for all of us.
To put it in the most blunt way possible, no one genuinely wanted a female president in office. But why? There are not enough excuses to make Hillary Clinton seem like a worst candidate than Donald Trump. Every politician has their mistakes, there is nothing clean about politics. Our history has followed a path in which women have always been let down. Since the founding of our country, white men have received everything for free, they are privileged simply because of their assigned birth. As women we have been fighting for the same rights for centuries. Now we've been hit hard, and the only possible chance we had to get into office is over.
To all the young girls out there, please don't lose hope. Take this election as a learning experience, as a precautionary tale for your future. Look at what you are up against and prepare to fight and win.
