How basketball has taken over.

We’re Playing Basketball

In recent years the sports world has begun to see a change in interconnectivity between fans and players. The sport that has proven to be the best example of this is basketball. The NBA is now all-encompassing and has found its way into our culture and many people's ways of life.

10 years ago the Celtics and Lakers were the teams to beat in the east and west respectively. In 2008 the Celtics won and haven't won again since, while the Lakers won 2 years in a row after losing in 2008 to the Celtics. Much has changed since then both teams are finally true contenders for a chip and look to revitalize a rivalry that has been going on since the association was formed. It's key to note this because of the history between Lebron and Kyrie. To spare the details, Kyrie left Cleveland to join Boston much to the surprise and displeasure of Lebron. As we look back to that year, 2008, Lebron hadn't even left Cleveland yet. These few examples exemplify how the league has changed dramatically on a player and team level.

Let's turn to us, the fans. As an avid sports watcher and enthusiast, I've seen the association get better and better as the NFL has begun to fade. The reason the NBA has grown and matured at its current rate is that of its fan base and its year-round coverage. Basketball does not sleep, night or day. Like soccer, it's an easy game to pick up a ball for and play with minimal to no gear. Everyone's yelled "Kobe!" when they shoot their paper ball into a wastebasket. I Euro step to get around my roommates in tight crevices of the apartment. We all want to replicate what our favorite stars do.

The NBA's marketing has also added value to the league and its players. On every social media platform, there is an advertisement for a players shoes, a game, or the players promoting a product. These athletes have become role models for young kids. Kids want to grow up and be a Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant. The NBA is getting younger each year with squads like the Phoenix Suns who have an average starting line up age of 21 years old. The younger the more exciting but there is a risk of these young stars to bust but thankfully there is the g league.

The NBA has created immense opportunity for young stars and fans alike. With promotions and things like fantasy basketball that make you feel like you're actively participating while in the comfort of your own home. The NBA is taking over and garnering more attention in people's day to day life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
