Growing up as the oldest of three, I learned to become the leader of the pack. To this day, I always make sure there's a game plan, everyone knows what's going on, and that I have everything I need with me (I'm always carrying a water bottle.) Yeah, my friends make fun of me; but I can't help it. I'm the mom of the group. In fact, I'm the mom of any group I'm with and that's just how it'll always be. So this time, I'm going to share some of my "mom-friend" wisdom that will help you out in times of running late and forgetting that one thing you told yourself to bring with you on your way out. I will admit that some of these are weird, but if it makes life easier/better, who cares. And this is coming from someone who once used the fringe on my friend's skirt to literally sew her into it after the zipper broke.
1. Get Deodorant Off Your Black Shirt
After changing 6 times before finally putting the first outfit back on, you realize you got deodorant on your black shirt. It happens to the best of us. Just grab a pair of jeans (from the other 5 options for the night) and use it to "scrub" the deodorant off. For some odd reason, this works. Don't question the magic of denim, unless you're into rocking wardrobe mishaps.
2. Change the Look of Your Foundation
Sometimes you buy a foundation that looks great some days, and other days it's just eh. This hack is great if you're not feeling your look for the day, want a dewy glow, or are dealing with dry skin. Before you apply your foundation, add a few drops of oil (like Argan or Maracuja) and mix well before blending into your skin. You'll look and feel like those beauty experts whose makeup tutorials are all over Instagram. I noticed that on days where my skin is dryer than normal, it blends smoothly without emphasizing the dry skin and leaves your skin looking healthy and glowing. Lately, I've been using White & Elm Rosehip and Argan Antioxidant Serum that I got in my Birchbox and it's definitely been a game changer.
3. Slow Down Acne Overnight
I'm sure we've all heard the toothpaste hack before. Got a pimple you want to get rid of? Apply a layer of toothpaste to it before bed and let it shrink while you sleep. While this won't make your acne completely disappear overnight, it'll definitely lessen the redness, dry it up, and shrink it by the time you wake up in the morning. Just a fair warning, it will tingle a little bit, but it's definitely worth a try.
4. Stop Nausea in Its Tracks
So you've been drinking and all of a sudden everything is spinning. Or you've been scrolling Twitter for the entire length of your car ride and now you're carsick. Chewing on some peppermint gum can help keep the nausea at bay. I learned this at a house party and have added peppermint gum to my arsenal of supplies that I take with me everyday. This might not completely stop your from throwing up, but it'll definitely help with the nausea for a while, and can also save your car from a very necessary trip to the car wash the next morning after being the designated driver.
5. Use Dryer Sheets to Avoid Mosquitos
It's that glorious time of the year where we can spend our days and nights outside while simultaneously being attacked by mosquitos. If you don't have bug spray around, dryer sheets can do the job too. Use a dryer sheet to wipe down any exposed areas and then keep it on your for the rest of the night. This helps to mask our scent and hopefully keep the mosquitoes away.
6. Get the Most Use Out of Your Pore Strip
Those blackhead strips are a total lifesaver, but you might be missing a key step the instructions on the box don't tell you. Before you apply the strip on your skin, wet a washcloth with hot water and hold it on your nose/place of application to open up your pores. After your pores are open, continue with the original instructions of wetting your skin and then applying the strip. This makes a huge difference-- one that's very noticeable after the 15-minute mark is up.
7. Alternatives to Oil Blotting Papers
So, this one is a little bit weird. I heard about it and tried it. It worked, but a lot of people are against it because, well, it involves a toilet seat cover. The middle part of disposable toilet seat covers in public restrooms can be used as a stand-in oil blotting paper for oily skin. It does work, as I said, but because it's in the bathroom where the toilet water is splashing up pretty much all day, this one isn't a fan favorite. So this ones up to you if you want to take the chance, or are just in desperate need of a blotting paper. If you're not up for the toilet seat hack, old fashioned napkins work just as well!
