10 Ways To Destress

The final stretch of the semester after spring break can be stressful. With projects, tests, quizzes, and life picking up it is important to take time to de-stress. Here are 10 ways to relax during the last several weeks of the semester.

1. Spend some time doing something you love

It is so important to take a break on the things you have to do and spend time doing something you enjoy. Whether that is playing your favorite sport, playing an instrument or cooking, taking the time to invest in your hobbies is a great way to take your mind off of the things causing you stress.

2. Exercise

Exercise is one of the best things you can do to de-stress. Going on a run or doing a quick workout at the gym produces endorphins which improve mood and the ability to sleep. A positive attitude and a better night's rest are two great things to combat a stressful week.

3. Read

Reading something you have been wanting to read is so much more enjoyable than being assigned a reading in a textbook. Finding a quiet, relaxing place to read a book can help you escape any worries or stress that is looming.

4. Take a power nap

Taking a nap can help reduce stress levels. Typically, when you de-stress your productivity is much lower than it could be. Taking a power nap for half an hour can lead to feeling better rested which will lead to more productive work.

5. Meditate

Meditation can be a quick, relaxing activity to do to calm any stresses or worries. de-stress looks different for everyone; whether it is taking a moment to relax while outside or finding a quiet room, spending time to practice meditation can help restore your inner peace at any time. Focusing on something else, such as your breathing, is a healthy distraction from daily stresses.

6. Listen to music

There is something so joyful about listening to your favorite music. Not only can it just be a fun break to listen to music, but certain genres can actually reduce stress because of their calming tempo and rhythm.

7. Prioritize and organize

It can be easy to become stressed after realizing everything you have to do in a short amount of time. It can be overwhelming to look at a long t-do list and realizing that you may not have enough time to do everything. Prioritizing and organizing the things you have to do in the time you have to do it can be very helpful to increase productivity and efficiency.

8. Take a bath

Taking a bath can be one of the most relaxing parts of any day to some people. Lighting some candles and playing some relaxing music can be a nice escape from any stresses or worries that the day may bring.

9. Unplug

Unplugging from social media and communication for a little may help ease some stress. It is so easy to get caught up on what other people may be doing on social media, and it makes for a big distraction. Unplugging can help you focus on what is de-stress and what needs to improve.

10. Spend time with friends

There is nothing better than spending intentional, quality time with friends. Whether it is going out to eat or just hanging out, spending time with the people you love can be a great mental break from any stress that may be going on.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
