While your eyes can be "the windows to your soul," they can also be the windows to your intentions and your personality. For many people, eye movement is something that is natural, therefore, it cannot be controlled. This is why many people deem eye movements and patterns to be the strongest form of body language. This short-list goes through some of the most important and critical eye patterns that you need to know.
1. When your pupils dilate, that can indicate that you are interested in a topic or object.
Next time you are talking to someone, try changing the topic to something that interests them and watch to see if their eyes dilate. For example, you can start a conversation with your friend about school and slowly shift to the topic of food or shopping. More likely than not, you will see their pupils enlarge.
This is because it is only instinctive for your eyes to try to take in as much of its surroundings as possible by allowing as much light in as possible.
2. However, when your pupils constrict, that can mean something negative.
While dilated pupils can mean that you are interested in something, constricted pupils can mean the opposite. When your pupils constrict and limit incoming light, it can look as though you are trying to shut out the world. It can also show that your brain has been overwhelmed and needs to take a break.
3. Looking to the right or the left might indicate what you are trying to do with a conversation.
If you happen to be left-handed, the following situation might be the opposite for you. However, for most people who are right-handed, looking to the right can indicate more innovated and creative thoughts. Depending on the situation, this can also sometimes let people know whether someone is lying and making up a story as they go. On the other hand, looking to the left can be a good indicator of someone trying to recollect a certain memory or thought.
4. Maintaining constant eye-contact can have the power to intimidate.
Sometimes, especially in western culture, maintaining constant eye-contact can be a show of dominance and power and is used to intimidate others.Furthermore, it can also be seen as a sign of lying or deceiving as sometimes people can try to overcompensate their lies through their body language, in particular, their eye-movement.
Oftentimes, they might try to assert their dominance over other people so that their guilt or lie can go undetected. Aside from this, holding eye contact while lying can further be seen as one person trying to fully gauge another person's reaction to see if they are convinced or not.
5. Rapid blinking can mean more than just one thing.
Naturally, when your eyes water, you blink. However, rapid blinking can often show high levels of stress, disbelief, lying or interest. Sometimes when your brain is feeling overwhelmed or you are thinking a lot, you tend to blink a lot more than usual. Similarly, when you find yourself in disbelief over what someone is saying or what you are seeing, you begin to rapidly blink as if trying to say, "I can't believe this."
In addition, rapidly blinking when someone pauses during an interesting conversation can also show that the person was keeping their eyes wide open and listening to you intently. To determine exactly what you are dealing with, it is important to consider the situation that you are in and then deduce from there.
The eyes can sometimes hold the master key to the mind and its workings. It helps you become more aware of your own thoughts and feelings as well as others. It's always fun to try to use these pointers in your everyday conversation and see where it will take you!
