4 Ways Country Girls Survive

When you're a country girl in a city world.

4 Ways Country Girls Survive
Hannah Meeske

Raised in the country, it’s nearly impossible to leave behind your roots. The redneck tendencies and off-the-beaten-path habits are hard to kick. They’re engrained in your being, marking who you are. When you take a country girl out of the country, chaos ensues.

Many growing up in rural towns reside there forever, never stepping out of the county line for long. For some, their eyes wander and light upon new things spurring them outside of the limits of “Comfort City.” For me, I had the duality of two oppositional interests—rodeo and horses; books and writing. The former fills my waking hours, my evenings, and weekends with manure scooping, hay tossing, and horse riding. The latter draws up images of New York City publishing houses and hotshot editor jobs like Sandra Bullock’s in "The Proposal." The push and pull is hard, but the most difficult aspect is dressing the part. Taking off my cowboy boots and old ball cap, to don stylish heels and a fabulous top.

So how does a country girl make it in the city world?

1. She doesn’t take off her cowboy boots.

She can try fitting in, but it’s not worth it. A country girl is one of the best kind of girls out there. Her cowboy boots, worn jeans, messy hair, and old ball cap define her.

2. Or the ball cap.

If she didn’t do her hair every day to begin with, she surely isn’t going to start. A ball cap is a lifesaver. But in the real world, some places don’t allow hats—like they're too classy or something. Thank god for the invention of the headband.

3. She doesn’t take her attitude off, either.

The most attractive thing about a country girl is her kick-butt, don’t give-a-care attitude. A country girl is unique: strong-willed and sarcastic.

4. She always returns to her roots.

One of the most important things about a country girl is that no matter what situation she is in or where she is, she holds true to her values and her home grown roots. She’s a hard worker and a passionate lover. Whether she rodeos, works on a ranch, or simply lives in a rural county, country girls are a special breed. And when they try to make it in the city world, the only real problem they have is with parking their pick-ups.

Here’s to us country girls trying to make it in a city world.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
