Several tragedies have occurred in various nations recently. In November of 2015, ISIS attacked locations in Paris with guns and explosives. 130 people were killed and another 368 were left injured. People from everywhere showed their support for the victims and their families through social media, fundraisers, and art projects to raise awareness to the tragedy. Unfortunately, that was just the beginning. On June 10, 2016 singer, Christina Grimmie, was shot dead during a signing held in Orlando after her performance. Two days later, a gay nightclub in Orlando was targeted with another one of ISIS's attacks. 50 people died, 53 others were injured. On Bastille Day in Nice, France many people were found dead or injured after Mohamed Bouhlel drove a truck through crowds in the city. On July 22, 2016 a mall in Munich, Germany was the location of another mass shooting.
What's next? Even though not all of these violent acts have happened in our country, they still affect us tremendously. It's sad to hear all of these death and injury counts be released. It is necessary so that people are aware of the severity of the event, but it takes a toll on the heart. Germany is one of our closest allies and President Barack Obama has stated that he will do as much as he can to help the country in their time of need. In a recent speech, Obama made it clear that he hates giving these repetitive speeches every time there is a tragedy. He knows that delivering a speech is an appropriate response to these situations but he also realizes that these events are happening way too much. Just as people are recovering from one incident, another occurs and the world is thrown into turmoil. Families live in fear when they see these vicious acts occurring in random places. People are left wondering "Where next? Are we safe?". This is what it has come to and different countries are working together to take measures to prevent these attacks. It's getting to the point where people are not surprised when there is another act of violence somewhere in the world. As a nation, we really must focus on strengthening our bonds and paying more attention to current events. We must stay aware of our surroundings at all times, stand up for what we believe in, and try to gain an understanding as to why some people support certain things. Empathy is the key. We should not have to live in a world where all we see are breaking news reports with photos of families in mourning at a new memorial site. As Ben Affleck stated in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, "Men are still good. We fight, we kill, we betray one another, but we can rebuild. We can do better. We will. We have to."
