10 Things I Want My New Roommate To Know

For the roommate I probably should have had last year, too.

I’ll be the first to admit that this whole “living with other people” thing is not always ideal. I went in random last year and ended up with a roommate that I did not click with as much as I would have liked. Tragic, I know.

But do not worry for me, dear readers, as I have gotten a much better roommate this year that I love so much who I will call Maya to keep her actual name anonymous.

This is super corny, but I am determined to be friends with Maya (and I became pretty close with her last school year). Here are 10 things I hope she will know this coming school year:

1. I know I am sharing a space with you, but to me, that means you can have as much of my space as you need. I know we have to get along for a year.

2. You will wake up some days (or all days, as fate would have it right now) to find a note from me on the board. I know that you sleep in later than me and have later classes, so I won’t wake you up.

3. That being said, I know mornings suck, since neither of us is are morning people. I’ll make sure there is water in the Keurig so we don’t die from lack of caffeine.

4. The fact that you like the same TV shows as me is absolutely AMAZING. We’re going to have a few Netflix nights so we can binge watch everything. (And I apologize in advance for making you watch everything I like, since the TV is kind of on my side of the room).

5. I have a tendency to not do my homework until the day before things are due… or the hour they are due….or 5 minutes before. Regardless, I will try and keep my procrastination from becoming too much of your procrastination. I cannot guarantee I won’t bother you a little bit.

6. If I bother you, let me know. I am super excited about everything right now, and you, as you live with me, are getting the majority of my attention when I am able to be anywhere except class.

7. I’m annoying. I know you’ve heard me tell the same stupid stories 14 times in the short 2 weeks we’ve been living in the same room and the year we’ve been friends. The 12 times you’ve laughed at the same stories tells me I can tell these stories another few times for good measure.

8. I love complaining to you. I love talking to you about your day and finding out more about the weird guy you were talking to in the hallway. We legitimately see 4 people in this building, and the ones we don’t know already are subjects of conversation.

9. My mom cares about you just as much as she cares about me. I am sure that she will write you cards or notes, or give me cards/notes/candy/anything you need so they get to where they need to be.

10. You are the best roommate I could ever ask for.

Here’s to hoping you all have the same amazing, wonderful roommate that I do!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
